Homeless on Halloween: Celebrating Halloween at the Homeless Shelter
Halloween Can Be Fun for Homeless Kids Too!
Decorations
Homeless shelter operators should allow families to decorate their own spaces for Halloween, and encourage the kids to help decorate the house or facility common areas. Window clings are easy to remove after the holidays, and door mats placed at the doorway of each family's space are festive. Homemade Halloween decorations are fun for the kids to make.
Costumes
Most homeless families cannot afford to purchase Halloween costumes for their kids, and many do not have possessions with which to make homemade costumes. Homeless shelters can save old sheets, blankets, and odds and ends for kids to use for making Halloween costumes. Donated Halloween costumes should be saved and re-used when possible.
Food
If the homeless shelter allows families to prepare their own food, encourage families to get together and bake some Halloween goodies. Homeless shelters that provide meals can make a fun Halloween themed meal for Halloween.
Homeless shelter operators can spend a bit of time researching where the safe Halloween events will take place in the areas near the shelter. Many churches have Halloween party events such as "Trunk or Treat". A notice can be placed at the homeless shelter telling families where these Halloween events are located.
Community Help
Many community members enjoy donating Halloween candy to homeless shelters for the children. While donating Halloween candy is thoughtful, there are other donations that would help homeless kids enjoy Halloween. If you want to help the homeless shelters in your area on Halloween, try donating these items: Halloween decorations, Halloween themed paper plates and napkins, ingredients for baking Halloween goodies, black light light-bulbs, costumes, pumpkins, carving kits.
