Homeless World Cup to Be Held in Paris, France

The Homeless World Cup Brings Dignity Through Soccer to the Players

The Homeless World Cup was founded by world-leading social entrepreneur Mel Young. It is supported by UEFA, Nike, Global Ambassador Eric Cantona, and international footballers Didier Drogba and Rio Ferdinand.

The premise behind this is to use soccer as a means to encourage homeless people to change their lives. It also seeks to change the attitudes of governments, the media, and the general public so that they can effect real change. According to the website, "...over 70 per cent of players experience a significant life change. They come off drugs and alcohol, move into homes, jobs, education and training, repair relationships and even become coaches and players." The Paris 2011 Homeless World Cup takes place in August, followed by the Mexico 2012 Homeless World Cup.

This year there will be 64 teams from 53 nations around the world taking part in the competition. The reason for the extra number of people is that there are some countries that send both men and women's teams. Some countries have utilized the soccer teams to help provide education, health and substance abuse services, and opportunities for economic empowerment through entrepreneurship.

In 2010 the Homeless World Cup was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In a great show during the finals, the Brazilian team beat the Chilean team 6-0 to take home the Homeless World Cup. Ukraine beat Palestine 6-4 for the Dignitary Cup, Austria beat Lithuania 5-4 for the City Cup, and the Host Cup went to the Phillipines.

The best part is that everyone gets to meet others who have shared similar stories, learn to celebrate the successes that each one has had, and forge friendships that endure through time.

The Homeless World Cup will be held August 21-28, 2011 in Paris. To learn more about the event, visit the website or follow them on their Facebook page.
