Apple crisp is easy enough for a beginner to make. It is a good recipe to use when teaching your elementary age daughter or son how to cook.
Here is a simple recipe with a couple of variations:
Homemade Apple Crisp:
1/8 cup of lemon juice
½ cup water
2 to 3 pounds of tart apples
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 cup of brown sugar
½ cup of oatmeal
1/3 cup of brown sugar
2 tablespoons of flour
4 tablespoons of soft butter
Peel, core and slice apple. Mix one eighth of a cup of lemon juice and half a cup of water, and drop apples into the liquid. Mix gently and drain. Then mix one teaspoon cinnamon and one cup of brown sugar in a medium size bowl and coat. Pour the apple/cinnamon sugar mixture into a pie pan.
Mix one half cup of oatmeal, one third cup of brown sugar and two tablespoons flour. Cut four tablespoons of softened butter into mixture with a fork. Sprinkle on top of apples.
Bake at 350 degrees for thirty minutes until the apples are tender. Dish into bowls while hot, and serve topped with ice cream or whipped cream.
For a variation, do not mix the apples with cinnamon and sugar before pouring into a pie pan. Leaving out these two ingredients will save a few calories, but really, who wants to worry about calories when eating such a rich dessert?
Another variation is to pour caramel topping over the oatmeal mixture before placing into the oven.
Try all of these variations of apple crisp at home, and enjoy the fall months.
