Homemade Baby Food - Yummy Good Chi for Baby

Do We Really Have to Buy Stale Corporate Jarred Baby Food?

Baby makin' Truth of the week...
Make your own baby food!

Thank Goddess my midwife told me about making my own baby food. It totally rocks. My baby was solely breastfed for 5 months, and then we added carrots. It was awesome. We picked up a hand cranked baby food grinder for $12 at Whole Foods, steamed some carrots until they were really soft, and then put 'em through the grinder, added a little apple juice and voila. I put the extra into an ice cube tray and stuck it in the freezer, and baby's been eating carrots for a week! We've added potato, and mashed up avocado. I always add a little breast milk (you could use formula) to get it really the right consistency, and to add that familiar flavor. Another thing I've found is that the blender is superior to the grinder. I put chicken soup in there and make the baby a puree. Steamed beets blended with a little apple juice is a hit too. The possibilities are endless.

On those days when the baby spits way more out than he swallows, no biggie, - he just nurses a little extra. We've added some rice cereal too. What's really cool is that one day we can mash up almost anything hat we're having for dinner in that grinder, and what's even cooler is that my baby is getting food that still has chi in it - FRESH baby food.

We really have just been feeding our baby what we eat when we eat it. It's wonderful. He's one of us. He likes it all.

You know, I'm all into capitalism and freedom and stuff, but somehow I think that whoever decided that there was a profit to be had in disposable diapers, pads, wipes, and baby food and formula, managed to brain wash an entire couple of generations of women from what seems to be such common sense. I suppose women were so ready to be liberated from the imposed life of a house wife, that they recklessly adopted some erroneous (not to mention expensive) ideas that were handed to them such as - breast feeding is passe, baby food from a jar is good food for your baby, that having your baby in a hospital is safer than having it at home, and that the handiness of the disposable diaper far surpasses the old-fashioned cotton diaper. Hmmm.

I think we need to remember the truth. And the truth of the week is: home made baby food is the best baby food for your baby, is so easy to do, and will save you so much money.

A great book to get started with is Feed Me, I'm Yours by Vicki Lansky.
