Homemade Baby Wipes

Are They Really Cheaper? or is Huggies Better?

Marie Again
It may seem a little silly to try and save a few cents here and there when it's so much easier to buy things off the market shelf. But can we really afford to be doing these things when there is so much we can do to save a few pennies?

I was researching cloth verses disposable diapers on Google, when I ran into an article about homemade baby wipes. I have a friend who makes her own, but I thought she was just crazy and making work for herself. As I looked into it more and more, I found that the recipe and the procedure seemed quite easy. So I cut a paper towel roll in half and cleaned out an old plastic coffee container and went to work! 5 minutes later, voila!, my own special homemade baby wipes for my little precious girl. I was so proud.

Here's the cost comparison broke down about as far as possible, followed by the recipe (it's at the end if you'd like to skip all the mumbo jumbo).

Bounty Select-a-Size 2 pk $3.98

138 sheets per roll=

roll gets cut in 1/2

552 wipes $0.007 per wipe

Johnson & Johnson Bedtime Bath $5.49 @diapers.com

45 doses (45 wipe sets) per 15 fl oz.= $0.122 per wipes batch

Tea Tree Oil $7.66 for 2 fl oz

each drop= 0.05ml or 1200 drops

2 drops needed for each batch = $0.013

Johnson & Johnson Baby Oil $4.49 @diapers.com

45 doses per 15 fl oz = $0.10 per batch

Soooo.....

1 batch =

138 wipes * $0.007 = $0.966

1 dose bath = $0.122

1 dose tto = $0.013

1 dose baby oil = $0.10

Total = $1.20 for 138 wipes ($0.009 per wipe)

Comparison...

Parent's Choice Wipes Unscented 80 wipes for $2.12 or $0.03 per wipe

My wipes would be $0.72 for the same amount $1.40 SAVINGS!!!

Huggies Natural Care Bulk @diapers.com 384 wipes for $15.99 or $0.04 per wipe

My wipes would be $3.46 for the same amount $12.53 SAVINGS!!!

Want Expensive soft Baby Wipes....

Viva paper towels @ drugstore.com 6 rolls (55 sheets per roll) = $10.49

55 wipes per batch

each wipe $0.016 = $0.874

1 dose bath = $0.122

1 dose tto = $0.013

1 dose baby oil = $0.100

Total = $1.11 for 55 wipes ($0.02 per wipe)

Compare to:

see above...

80 of my wipes = $1.61 Savings of $0.51

384 of my wipes = $7.68 Savings of $8.31

Even when you decide to use the most expensive, luxurious paper towel to make your

wipes, it's still a better option than even the cheapest wipes at Walmart.

If you only used 6 wipes per day for the 2 years (average) that your child is in

diapers you'd spend $39.42 for homemade wipes, and $175.20 for Parent's Choice!

That's a savings of $135.78!!! This can be made even larger by buying ingredients

on sale or in bulk! Just imagine the 2 year savings from a big brand name wipe like

Pampers or Huggies!

WIPES RECIPE:

1 cup boiled water(cool it off a bit first!) distilled even better

2 drops Tea Tree Oil

2 teaspoons Baby Wash

2 Teaspoons Baby Oil

Mix between two glasses (or whatever just don't shake)

Cut a roll of paper towel in half. Remove cardboard core.

Place in a reclosable jar (I used a Maxwell House coffee container well rinsed,

I don't advise metal though.) Pour wet solution over your new wipes!

I am a mommy, and very proud of it. My little girl is my everything in life right now. I am here on AC to try and get heard by other adults, and in the mean time try and make a little extra cash for our home.  View profile
