Colored Salt Crystals that Look Like Sand
Natural sand can be dirty and contain debris, and store-bought craft varieties are expensive. Consider using salt instead of sand, especially when requiring a large amount for a group project. Salt is very cheap, and since crystals are uniform in size and shape, no one will know the difference.
For every cup of salt, stir in 2 teaspoons of powdered tempera paint. Store it in a container with a tight-fitting lid or in a zipper top plastic bag in a location with low humidity. Use this homemade mixture in the same way as you would use colored sand. It can be glued onto projects of all types, and it will look just as good as the expensive colored varieties sold in stores.
Homemade Colored Tempera Paint Sand
Actual sand can be colored in the same way as salt, but the natural tan-colored type contains tiny pebbles and it will result in darker colors that are not nearly as rich or as vibrant as store-bought varieties. Consider purchasing a large bag of white play sand instead of craft varieties. You will still save a considerable amount of money, and the homemade type will turn out just as colorful as the expensive types sold in stores. Just follow the aforementioned instructions for homemade colored salt crystals, and store it in sealed containers until ready to use.
Fun and Creative Group Craft Project Ideas
Homemade colored salt or sand is fantastic for making beautiful sculptures in clear jars. Save small glass jars with lids. Baby food jars are fantastic for large group projects. Provide open containers with small scoops, and have crafters create layers of colors. Have them run a toothpick along the insides of the jars to create various colored shapes and interesting designs.
Mosaics are also great craft projects for groups of kids as well as adults. Provide craft project participants with six-inch by six-inch pieces of thin particle board or heavy-duty cardboard. Have them create designs with white craft glue, and sprinkle on homemade colored sand to make beautiful pictures. From simple geometric designs to rainbows, the options are virtually endless.

This is a very neat summer craft idea, K.! When I was a kid, we used to make colored sand paintings in tall glasses. There was an abundance of sand where I grew up - El Paso. LOL

I remember making sand art. I would have never thought of using salt. That was used to seal the picture.
