Homemade Cookie Recipes for Homemade Cookies Day Equal Snickerdoodles Galore

Rachel Heller
There are many great holidays that we celebrate year after year that are familiar to everyone such as Passover and Easter and Hanukkah and Christmas. In addition, there are holidays and special days that aren't familiar to everyone such as Australia Day and Homemade Cookies Day. I had never heard of homemade cookies day but I am thrilled that there is a day that recognizes the art of making homemade cookies. This is because since I was 11, I have loved to bake cookies. The first kind of homemade cookies that I baked were chocolate chip cookies; however, today I also bake other types of homemade cookies such as Snickerdoodles and sugar cookies with toffee and butterscotch chips for holiday gifts.

Homemade Cookies Day is October 1st and I can't wait because it will give me a reason to make a few batches of homemade cookies for family and friends. I started making both regular and chocolate snickerdoodles a couple of years ago and they have become a staple in my homemade cookie making repertoire. I would also like to inform both homemade cookie bakers and homemade cookie eaters about an interesting tidbit about snickerdoodles. These delicious and cute sounding homemade cookies are not related to chocolate candy bar. Since I love baking cookies and to celebrate homemade cookies day I will share homemade cookie recipes involving snickerdoodles.

Snickerdoodle Cookies

Dough:
½ cup each butter and shortening (marg), at room temperature
1 ½ cups sugar
2 eggs
1 ½ teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

Beat butter, shortening, sugar, and eggs together until creamy. Add cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt, and then blend. Add flour and mix well. Chilling overnight is preferred; otherwise, chill the dough at least two hours

Topping
3 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Combine topping ingredients in a small and shallow bowl After, chilling, shape dough into balls about 1 ½ inches in diameter. Drop dough balls into topping mixture and coat entire surface well. Place on ungreased baking sheets about 2 inches apart.

Bake at in a 375 degree oven for ten minutes or until golden brown. Let stand one minute and remove to cooling racks.

Makes about 3 dozen cookies

Chocolate Snickerdoodles

½ cup butter, softened
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
2 ¼ cups flour
1 tsp. cream of tarter
½ tsp. baking soda
¼ tsp. salt
½ cup unsweetened cocoa
2 tbsp. sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon

Beat 1 ½ cups sugar and butter until fluffy. Add vanilla and eggs and mix well. Add flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and cocoa; mix well. In another bowl, mix 2 tablespoons sugar and cinnamon. Shape dough into 1 inch balls and roll in cinnamon mixture. Bake at 400 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes or until set. Remove immediately from cookie sheets.

Making homemade cookies for the holidays or any day is a fun a tasty treat. But, now that I am aware that there is a day celebrating homemade cookies, cooking making and baking take on a deeper meaning; happy homemade cookies day. Source: www. cooks.com
