Homemade Cosmetics: All-Natural Lotions, Lip Gloss and More

Cosmetics can be expensive and some use chemicals that are harsh on your skin, so why not make your own cosmetics? They are inexpensive, and work just as well as store bought items or even better because they don't use abrasive chemicals.

Cleansing Cloths

These have been popular for some time now, but because they are a convenience item they are expensive. You can create your own in very little time and at less than half the price. Find cotton gauze pads in bulk. Then when you are ready to wash your face get the pad wet, rub it on a gentle soap, sprinkle on a bit of cornmeal and you have a great exfoliating cleansing cloth.

Prevent Blemishes

Dip a cotton ball in witch hazel or calamine lotion and wipe it on your face. You should stay clear and clean. Chilled witch hazel also has the same effects as a toner.

Blemish Fighter

If you do happen to get a pimple (let's face it, it happens sometimes) mix baking soda with a small amount of water to form a paste. Apply the paste to the blemish before you go to bed and the baking soda will dry out the pimple overnight. Just rinse the paste off in the morning.

Deodorant

Witch hazel also works wonderfully as a deodorant. Apply it under the arms, on the feet or any other area with a cotton ball.

Age spots or freckles

To reduce the pigment of age spots and freckles apply odorless castor oil each night before bed. You can also apply lemon juice to the spots.

Vanilla Lip Gloss

This gloss is perfect to sooth slightly chapped lips and give you a healthy shine. In a saucepan over low heat mix together a tablespoon of honey, a tablespoon of almond base oil, and one and a half teaspoons beeswax. Remove from heat and add five drops of vanilla essential oil. Stir. Place the pan in a small amount of cold water (do not let the water get in the pan) and stir the contents vigorously for about a minute. Put the mixture in storage containers and let sit for two hours before using. This gloss is best if used within a year.

Nail Nourishing Oil

Mix together 20 drops of lavender essential oil, and 10 drops of lemon essential oil. Next add 1 tablespoon almond base oil and 1 tablespoon jojoba base oil. Put a lid on the mixture and shake vigorously. Put a drop of the mixture at the base of each nail and massage it in each night. Put the mixture in a dark place for 24 hours. This is best if used within six months.
