This first craft idea I did in a kids club and the kids loved it! Take a bunch of the old crayons and use scissors to shred them. This is the adults job of course! Next, give each child a piece of wax paper. It needs to be a pretty big piece. Have the kids grab a hand full of the shredded crayons and put on one side of the wax paper then fold over. Then have an adult take a warm iron and iron over the wax paper. It makes a bunch of neat colors and shapes. They can trim the wax paper with construction paper and it makes a neat sun catcher. Another idea to go along with the wax paper idea is to cut out a fun shape when the crayons harden.
Another cool idea is to put several of the broken crayons in a muffin tin and heat up until they are all melted. Take them out and then let cool. When they cool you have a giant multicolored crayon. Be sure and line the muffin tin with cupcake liners.
Another little idea is to take the best crayons out of the broken ones and put them in a zip lock bag for your purse. They are great for keeping toddlers busy while in church or any event that requires they sit still for any length of time. You may also want to throw in a small coloring book or notebook to go with them.
A fun summer time craft for broken crayons is to make magnets. Take the lids from metal cans (you need to make sure you use the type of can opener that won't leave sharp edges) go outside and have the kids put the crayon shavings on the lid and just let them sit in the sun until they melt. Here in Texas, that does not take too long! Once they are melted onto the lid you can hot glue or stick a magnet on the back.
Something else you may not have ever considered doing with broken crayons is use them to color over scratched up furniture. This does work! I have used black on the side of our couch where our cat scratched to the wood. Once I colored the wood black you can hardly notice. You could use brown on other types of furniture. This would also work on wax floors.
As you can see there a lot of ways to use up your old crayons. These ideas are great for summer time fun and for those rainy days when the kids can't play outside.
