Homemade Dog Treats You Can Make Without Cooking Meat

Teresa Hoyt
Homemade dog treats are a great thing to make your dog. You can use top quality ingredients, no fillers or preservatives and your dogs will love you for it. Homemade treats can be customized you your dogs favorite flavors, sizes and shapes so your dog can have gourmet canine cuisine made with love by you.

As a vegetarian I am not fond of cooking meat. In fact, I don't do it anymore. I respect my dogs need to eat meat and I don't mind serving dry kibble, but as far as cooking meat for dog treats I have to pass. Some delicious (according to the dog) treats can be made with liver but I just can't face up to something like that even for the love of my dogs. There are meaty homemade dog treats you can make without cooking meat.

I heard about recipes that use meat baby food as the primary ingredients. This less disgusting ground meat is easy to use (just dump it in) and gives the dog treats a wonderful, meaty flavor that your dog will adore. Through trial and error I have my girl's favorite recipe below:

2 3/4 Cup whole wheat flour

1/2 Cup powdered milk

1 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. garlic powder (some dogs may like more)

1 egg

6 Tablespoons vegetable oil

8-10 Tbs. water

2 small jars strained baby food any flavor meat (my girls like beef)

Mix all ingredients together and knead thoroughly (use rubber gloves if it makes you feel better). Roll out dough to 1/2 inch thick. Use a dog bone shaped cookie cutter or just cut into pieces. The way my dogs gobble them up, size and shape are entirely unimportant. Place biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 min. The number of treats depends on the size you choose to make them.

As with all recipes, you can experiment a bit and customize the biscuits to your dog's individual tastes. You can use beef (our favorite), chicken, liver or lamb flavored baby food as the main ingredient. These biscuits are a big hit with my girls who would say that mom doesn't make them nearly often enough.

You will be using meat in the recipe, but you don't have to get too friendly with it. You don't have to cook it and you don't have to deal with raw meat. This is my preference for making meaty dog treats without cooking meat.
