Homemade Egg Shampoos

Do it Yourself Hair Care

Home made shampoos, rinses, and other treatments can vary widely. There is also a host of different recipes that center around a single ingredient with several useful variations. Here are the three best egg based shampoo recipes that I have tested and used. Everyone's hair and scalp can reacted differently to the same recipe or singular ingredient, so I recommend trying more than one recipe before deciding on which is best for you. If you are trying any ingredient or recipe for the first time, please test for allergic reaction before diving in. Please remember that all natural ingredients can vary in strength, so it is best to start with small amounts with any changes you might make, you can always add a little more but once a recipe is mixed you cannot take anything back.

Egg Shampoo Mix with Oil
Ingredients:
  • 1 Large egg
  • 1 Teaspoon of olive oil
  • 1 Teaspoon of lemon juice
  • 1 Tablespoon of castile soap
  • 1/2 Cup of cold water
Mixture and Use Instructions:
  1. Whip all of the ingredients together.
  2. Massage the whipped mixture gently into your hair, concentrating on the roots and scalp.
  3. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes before rinsing out. Be sure that you only use cold or warm water when using any recipe including egg.
  4. I highly suggest following up egg based washes with a final rinse of water and vinegar.
Egg and Honey Shampoo Mix
Ingredients:
  • 1 Teaspoon of honey
  • 1 Large egg
  • 1 Egg yolk
  • The Juice of one medium-sized lemon
Mixture and Use Instructions:
  1. Scramble the honey and the eggs together very well.
  2. Add lemon juice and continue to mix well. If the egg is not well scrambled with the honey, you might notice some flocking after adding the lemon juice.
  3. As an optional step, you can add your favorite essential oils to change the smell of the blend. If you find the shampoo too drying for your hair you can add up to two teaspoons of oil to decrease the washing power. Just remember that with essential oils and oil less is more. A little of either can go a long way, so remember to start with small changes and to write down the amounts that you use and the results so that you do not create the perfect blend and then find yourself unable to repeat it.
  4. Apply the egg shampoo to the hair just you would a like normal shampoo. Keep in mind that this blend is much thinner than a commercial shampoo, so application can take a bit of practice and experimentation. Using a condiment bottle to contain and apply the shampoo could be the best, and lest frustrating, method.
  5. Let the shampoo sit for around five minutes so that the Lecithine do its work.
  6. Rinse your hair with lukewarm water, between 38-40°C. After the shampoo is completely rinsed from your hair, rinsing again in cold water can help add shine.
Simple Egg Shampoo
Ingredients:
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 3 Tablespoons of water
  • 1 Teaspoon of amla powder
Mixture and Use Instructions:
  1. Whisk all of the ingredients together until it is frothy and very thick.
  2. Apply the frothy blend to wet hair and massage in well to make sure all of your hair and scalp is covered.
  3. Leave the mixture in your hair the length of the shower, at least five minutes if not longer.
  4. Rinse your hair very well.
