Homemade Fabric Softener

Homemade fabric softener isn't hard to make- and when you make fabric softener yourself you can keep those nasty skin irritations at bay, on the cheap! Learn how to make homemade fabric softener, and customize the softener with your own signature scent as well to make your clothing smell simply wonderful!

To make your own homemade fabric softener, all you need is white vinegar and any essential oil of your choice. Apply 3 drops of your favorite essential oil to your washer while it fills with water and allow the washer to fill. Add 1/4 cup white vinegar, and then add your laundry detergent. If you have super sensitive skin, don't have to add any laundry detergent as the vinegar can and will kill any germs and odors and also lifts stains.

Your clothes will come out smelling amazing (although the essential oils are optional), and they will be soft and free of detergent as well. What's a nice little bonus is that the vinegar makes white clothes even whiter (brightens them) and pulls all the detergent out so you don't have itchy residue. For super heavy loads, increase your vinegar to 1/2 cup or a full cup (you won't hurt your load), or for whites, to make them brighter.

note: when adding essential oils to your washer for your laundry, be careful. Some scents, like peppermint or tea tree oil, smell a bit weird and can be too strong. Lavender, vanilla, and light fruit scents work better, typically. Also, be sure to add the essential oils before adding your clothing to load, to avoid possibly staining them. And don't worry about the vinegar smell- it fades as soon as the clothes dry.
