Homemade Fairy Halloween Costumes and Accessories

Fairy Halloween costumes work well for kids, teens and adults. There is a wide variety of homemade fairy costumes that you can make with cheap and readily available materials such as clothing and accessories from your closet, second-hand clothing from a thrift shop, craft supplies and floral supplies. Try out one of these creative homemade fairy costumes this Halloween.

Butterfly Homemade Fairy Halloween Costumes and Accessories

To make a homemade butterfly fairy costume, get a top and skirt in a feminine color such as pink, purple, lavender or pale blue. If you like, add some sheer fabric to the waist of the skirt and the ends of the sleeves. Wear panty hose or tights in a pale color to match one of the colors in your butterfly fairy dress. Add pumps, ballet slippers or Mary Jane shoes to a kid's or teen butterfly fairy Halloween costume. Add high heeled shoes to an adult butterfly fairy costume.

Butterfly fairy costume accessories are fairly easy to make. Make a pair of butterfly fairy wings by bending two wire coat hangers into triangle shaped wings. Cover the wings in fabric such as panty hose fabric or sheer chiffon, tulle or organza. Make sure the fabric matches or complements your butterfly fairy costume. Sew the fabric onto the wings or hot glue it on. Tape the curved hooks of the wire coat hangers together, then cover them with colorful cloth flowers. Attach elastic bands to the butterfly fairy wings with hot glue or sew them on where the wings will attach to your shoulders.

You can also make a butterfly fairy wand accessory easily. Paint a 12 inch long slender wooden dowel in a color that goes with your butterfly fairy costume. Cut out a 4 to 5 inch wide butterfly shape from craft foam or cardboard. Decorate the butterfly shape with glitter glue or iridescent acrylic craft paint. Attach the butterfly shape to the end of the dowel with hot glue. Tie ribbons to the dowel directly underneath the butterfly ornament. You can also attach some small cloth or plastic flowers in this area with hot glue. Make a butterfly fairy hair accessory by attaching a butterfly decoration or a sheer bow to a headband.

Dark or Gothic Homemade Fairy Halloween Costumes and Accessories

A dark or Gothic homemade fairy Halloween costume is a good choice for teens or adult women. Find a blouse or halter top in a dark color such as black or charcoal gray. Add a matching skirt with lots of black sheer fabric on top. You can also give your skirt a tattered look by shredding the edge or by attaching black ribbons to the waistline. Add black panty hose or tights, and feel free to rip them up in random spots. To give your dark fairy a more Gothic feel, wear a dark lace-up bodice over a ruffled blouse. Wear black shoes or boots to complement your dark fairy costume.

There are several different ways to make a dark or Gothic fairy wings accessory. You can make the wings in an insect shape. To do so, just follow the same instructions for making the butterfly fairy wings, but cover the wings in black cloth. Wrap the center of the wings in black ribbon. You can also bend the wire coat hangers into the shape of the top edge of a bird wing, then attach shredded black fabric or ribbon to the wire.

Then make a Gothic fairy wand accessory. Paint a 12 inch wooden dowel black. Cut a star out of cardboard, paint it black and attach it to the end of the dowel. Attach some sheer black fabric to the end of the wand so that it overlaps the star. Make a dark or Gothic fairy headpiece accessory by making some black flowers into a ring large enough to wear on your head. You could also get a princess tiara and paint it black.

Pixie Homemade Fairy Halloween Costumes and Accessories

Get a leotard, a mini-skirt and some panty hose or tights and pumps or ballet slippers in pale pastel colors. Buy some spray fabric glitter. Lay all of the items of clothing down on some newspaper and spray them on one side. When the glitter has dried, spray the other side. If you like, you can also get some squares of pale, sheer fabric and spray these with glitter as well. When they have dried, sew one corner of each square onto the waistband of the miniskirt.

Make a pixie fairy wing accessory from wire coat hangers. Shape the wire into the shape of an insect wing, then cover it with some sheer fabric with hot glue or a needle and thread. Paint on some insect wing veins using glitter glue.

Then make a floral crown accessory. Bend some floral wire into a loop. Get some cheap fabric flowers and tape them to the wire. Make a pixie fairy wand wand accessory by painting a wooden dowel silver, then attaching some sheer fabric, fabric flowers and ribbons to the top. You can spray this accessory with the fabric glitter, too, if you like. Get a small pouch to make a pixie dust accessory. Fill the pouch with glitter in any colors you like. When you wear your pixie fairy costume on Halloween, occasionally sprinkle some glitter as if it were fairy dust.

Woodland Homemade Fairy Halloween Costumes and Accessories

You can create a woodland fairy Halloween costume by using colors and decorations from nature. Get a blouse and mini-skirt in brown or green, or choose a pale floral color such as yellow, blue, lavender or pink. Wear panty hose or tights in a pastel color and shoes or ballet slippers in white, brown or green.

Make a woodland fairy wing accessory out of two wire coat hangers. Shape them like butterfly or dragonfly wings. Cover the wings in white, brown or green sheer fabric. Find some cloth flowers and sew them into the blouse and skirt of your woodland fairy costume. Paint a long wooden dowel in brown, green or a floral color. Attach a cloth flower to the end of the wand with hot glue to make a woodland fairy wand. Add some cloth leaves and ribbons in colors from nature to decorate your fairy wand even more. Make a woodland fairy headpiece by attaching flowers and leaves made from cloth or plastic to floral wire with tape.

Renaissance Homemade Fairy Halloween Costumes and Accessories

Find a satin or linen shirt, preferably with ruffles. If choosing a long sleeved shirt, select one with billowy sleeves. Add a laced corset to go over the blouse. Find a mini-skirt, knee-length or full length skirt with an overskirt and petticoats to make it fuller. To give the fairy costume a Renaissance feel, choose fabrics such as velvet for the skirt and sheer fabric such as organza or chiffon for the overskirt. Add stockings, panty hose or tights in a color that goes with the color of your costume. Choose pumps, lace-up sandals or ballet slippers to go with the Renaissance fairy costume.

A butterfly costume wing accessory would go very well with the Renaissance fairy Halloween costume. Paint a 12 inch wooden dowel either gold or silver. Then cut a star from cardboard and apply either gold or silver glitter glue to match the dowel. Attach the star to the dowel with glitter glue. Add accessories such as arm bands or a flowered wreath to match your Renaissance fairy Halloween costume.
