Step 1
Wash and dry your quilter's cotton and chenille with laundry detergent in warm water. Do not use softener on the fabric. Machine dry the two fabrics
Step 2
Measure and cut four 5-inch squares of quilter's cotton, four of chenille and four of quilt batting.
Step 3
Place one quilter's cotton square on top of a chenille square with the right sides of the two pieces facing each other. Place a square of quilt batting on top of the quilter's cotton square. Do this four times for the four coasters you are going to make.
Step 4
Sew along all four sides of each coaster with a ½-inch seam allowance. Leave a 2-inch opening in the middle of one of the sides. Turn the coasters right side out through the 2-inch opening.
Step 5
Turn in the raw edges of the fabric a 1/2 inch along the 2-inch opening of each coaster. Press the folds.
Step 6
Sew along all four edges of the coasters with a 1/8-inch seam allowance. Sew another square of stitches 1-inch inside that one. Sew one final square of stitches 1-inch inside the second square. Do this for each coaster to give them a quilted effect.
Step 7
Place the coaster on the wood table with the chenille side facing down. The soft chenille will protect the table from scratches and the coaster as a whole will protect it from water rings.
Things You'll Need:
¼ yard cotton quilter's fabric
¼ yard chenille
Quilt batting
Sewing machine
Iron
Tips and Warnings
Make extra sets of fabric coasters to give to friends and family as gifts.
Package coasters meant as gifts by wrapping them up with ribbon. Add a small tag explaining what the little fabric squares are and that they are handmade by you.
Fabric coasters are a good beginner's sewing project as the seams are all straight and the project overall is simple to complete.
Avoid allowing your skin from coming into contact with the hot plate of the iron to avoid burns.
Keep your hands far ahead of the needle of your sewing machine while guiding the coasters through the machine. You can sew through your fingers if you aren't careful.
