Homemade Gifts for the Photography Lover: Floppy Disk Photo Cube

Jen
I found a box of old floppy disks and I don't know about you but I haven't had a floppy drive in years so what is a great way to use up those old disks sitting around? Let's make a photo cube out of them! This is a great project for kids to make as a gift and is a unique way to display your photos at your desk. Make sure the disks you are using are either blank or only contain old information that you do not need as you will not be able to re-use these after this project.

You will need the following supplies:

6 floppy disks (I used different colors but the black ones look nicer)

Index cards

6 photos that can be cut

Low temp glue gun

Double sided tape or scrapbook mounting squares

The first thing you will need to do is cut the index cards into rectangles that measure 2 1/8" by 2 ¾" and then cut the pictures into rectangles that measure 2" by 2 5/8". Then use the double sided tape (or scrapbook mounting squares) to attach the picture onto the index card leaving a small white border around the picture. Continue doing this for the next five pictures.

Next you will attach each of these mounted pictures onto a floppy disk, again with the double sided tape, where you would normally place the label. As you can see in the picture, the last time I made this project I used two different colored disks but I actually prefer to use the old fashioned black ones with the silver clip, I think they look more classy. Many children will chose to use multicolored disks which is fine, it makes the whole project look more youthful.

Now using the low temp glue gun (don't use a high temp glue gun as you may be taking the risk of melting the disks) you will attach the disks to each other. To do so, start by placing one disk on a flat surface, picture side down, and run a thin line of glue down the side as close to the edge as possible and place the next disk on with the picture facing out. You will do the same thing to attach all six disks to each other, forming a cube. Make sure every time you attach a disk that the picture is facing out.

Let the glue dry and then display your photo cube for everyone to see or wrap it up to give away as a very unique gift.
