If you're going out for Halloween with your whole family for Halloween, you can all dress up in matching or complementary costumes. There are many books, movies, television shows and popular characters that can provide you with inspiration for your family group Halloween costume. Try some of these ideas to get you started.

Homemade Group Halloween Costume Idea for Families: Addams Family

Have Mom dress up as Morticia Addams by wearing a long black dress with bell sleeves and a long black wig. Dress Dad up like Gomez Addams using a dark pinstriped suit, a black tie, a fake mustache and a cigar. Another adult member of the family could dress up as Uncle Fester by wearing a bald cap, a monk-style robe and pale makeup with dark circles around the eyes. If you have a very tall man in your family, dress him up as Lurch with a black suit, a bow tie and a short gray wig. A young boy could dress up as Pugsley Addams by wearing a shirt with horizontal stripes and dark shorts. If he's too thin for Pugsley, get large clothes and add a little padding. The young girl in your family could dress up as Wednesday in a dark short dress with a white collar and cuffs. Braid Wednesday's hair into two pigtails. Pugsley and Wednesday would also work for adult family members. Additional members of your family could come as Grandmama Addams or Cousin Itt.

Homemade Group Halloween Costume Idea for Families: Pirates

Choose a ruffled linen or satin shirt, brown pants, boots and a pirate hat for Dad's pirate costume. Check out these tips on making a Jack Sparrow pirate Halloween costume for more ideas for Dad's costume. Mom's pirate costume could be similar, but with a skirt instead of pants. Dress up the kids as miniature pirates. Add pirate accessories such as feathers, ribbons, toy pirate swords or muskets, belts, colorful sashes for the waist and head, laced corsets for Mom and the girls, fake facial hair for Dad and the boys, vests, jackets and anything else that will help to make your pirate costumes original and unique.

Homemade Group Halloween Costume Idea for Families: Cats

Find leotards and tights or unitards for the entire family. Your family could all go as black cats by all wearing black leotards and tights, or you could all wear different colors such as brown, yellow, gray and white. Make cat's ears by attaching triangular pieces of felt to plastic headbands with hot glue. Make tails by stuffing a leg from a pair of tights or panty hose with tissue paper. Paint on cat's whiskers and noses with eyeliner pencil.

Homemade Group Halloween Costume Idea for Families: Clowns

Dress up the whole family in brightly colored baggy clothes. Find some wigs in bright colors such as red, green, yellow, purple and blue. Give each family member a silly hat for his or her clown Halloween costume. Then find some red noses that you can attach to your faces. Paint your faces white, then draw on clown eyebrows and a red clown mouth. Attach the red noses over the makeup. After the makeup is finished, have everyone put on white gloves.

Homemade Group Halloween Costume Idea for Families: Peter Pan

One of the boys in your group could dress up as Peter Pan by wearing a green tunic, brown pants and a small woodsman's hat with a red feather. Have one of the girls or women in your family group dress up as Tinkerbell by putting on a green sleeveless top, a green miniskirt and green slippers with white pom poms. Another girl in your family could dress up as Wendy by wearing a long light blue night gown and a tying her long hair back with a blue ribbon. Dress up Dad as Captain Hook using knee-length pants, an elaborate long red jacket, a large red hat with a feather and lacy ruffled material at the neckline and sleeves. Add a large plastic hook to hide your right hand. Other family members could come as the lost boys, Mr. Smee, the Indian chief, Tiger Lily, the Indian chief's daughter, the mermaids or Wendy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Darling.
