Homemade Halloween Costume on a Budget - Sponge Bob Squarepants

Jane Vee
With costumes of Sponge Bob easily costing over $25, a homemade costume is well worth the effort. Tweens can easily make their own Sponge Bob Squarepants Halloween Costume for a fraction of the cost of a new costume. Chances are good it will only be worn one or two times before being thrown out or given away. You may want to save your money and have some fun with a craft.

First, you will need to go to local stores and find an appropriate-sized rectangular box. In Titusville on US 1 there is Appliance Direct. Applianceville is on Hopkins in Titusville. You can also try Lowe's on Cheney Highway in Titusville.

The box should cover the torso area and be as long as shorts. Sponge Bob's face and torso will be the box. You will be painting, coloring, or gluing Sponge Bob's clothes onto the box.

After you find a box, you need to get the rest of the costume together. You can wear some type of white pants or tights under the box to stay warm. You may also want to wear a long sleeve white shirt just to keep warm and still match the costume. For shoes you can wear anything. If you have black or brown shoes, they would be preferable.

Now that all of the clothing necessities are gathered: box, shirt, pants or tights, and shoes, work on creating Sponge Bob. Cut a hole in the middle of the box so the wearer can see and breath. If you do not want to draw Sponge Bob's face on the box, you may want to let the person use their face as Sponge Bob's. Use yellow face paint to "become" Sponge Bob.

If the person decides to draw Sponge Bob's face and wants to keep their face hidden, buy some yellow sheer material and cover the hole for the wearer's face. The material can be sheer or lace to cover the hole. Cut holes in the box for the arms to come out. The arm holes should be made so the wearer can move their arms to get candy and to move as needed.

After the openings are cut, the box should be painted or colored. Take a pencil and lightly draw the shirt and tie. Also, outline the pants area. The face and any sponge pores need to be penciled in as well. Put the box on the wearer to make sure everything looks okay before painting the costume. Remember that the pants and shirt are only about one third of the box. The rest of the area is the head made of large eyes, a small nose, and a wide smile.

Material can be used for the clothes instead of drawing or painting them. You can use an actual tie for Sponge Bob's tie. Glue the material on the box. Paint or Color your box. Paint will look the best and cover the box completely. Pores can be added as an extra touch. The costumes that are purchased for Halloween do not have them. Pores just make a nice touch.

When the costume is done, let it dry thoroughly. Try on your Sponge Bob costume and make any needed adjustments. Enjoy your Halloween!

Fun idea, I love Sponge Bod. Do you suppose I could find a box big enough to fit me for Halloween. I weigh a lot more than 130 pounds. LOL
