Homemade Halloween Costume Ideas for Women

Jennifer Claerr
Halloween isn't just for kids anymore. Adults are joining the scene. Whether you're attending a hot Halloween party or taking the kids around the block, you'll want a costume that will turn heads. These women's costumes are very popular and sure to please.

Homemade Fairy Halloween Costume

First, look in your closet to see what dresses you have. Preferably the dress should be frilly and pink. If you don't have anything which will fit the bill, look at your local thrift store for second hand dresses. Look specifically for chiffon and lace. Vintage clothing is an excellent choice for the fairy costume, as well.

If you're in a hurry, you can make some simple wings out of cardboard for your homemade costume. Simply cut out the cardboard in the shape of butterfly wings and glue on some white paper with craft glue. Then draw on any colorful designs you would like to have. Make sure they match your outfit. For gossamer wings, bend a coat hanger into a butterfly wing shape. Then sew on some sheer fabric or attach a pair of panty hose. Decorate with glitter and fabric paints.

To make a wand, cut two stars from a piece of corrugated cardboard. Attach them to a dowel using hot glue. Paint the wand with glitter glue or metallic craft paints. Attach some elastic straps to hold them on at the shoulder.

Braid your hair and pin it up on your head. Then insert flowers -- fresh, dried or artificial -- into various points around the braid.

Homemade Princess Halloween Costume

Making a princess costume is similar to making a fairy costume. You'll want to use a fancy dress as the base. However, for the princess you'll probably want to have a longer skirt. However, make sure the skirt isn't so long that you can't show off your slippers.

Go over an old pair of pumps with glue. Sprinkle silver glitter on them and shake off the excess.

Twist some metallic chenille stems into loops to make a tiara. Or if you're in the mood to make something more elaborate, try stringing beads on some wire.

Homemade Cowgirl Halloween Costume

Check out your local thrift shop or vintage clothing store for western wear items. A western hat is an absolute must for the cowgirl costume. Look for designs on clothing such as stars on skirts and pants. Also keep your eyes peeled for items with leather or embroidered trim. A leather skirt with a fringe is another option.

Other ideas include pairing a frilly shirt with blue jeans, leather chaps and a leather vest. Put your outfit together with a pair of cowgirl boots. Make yourself the sheriff of your western town by wearing a gold colored star-shaped badge.

Homemade Disney Halloween Costumes

Tinker Bell is one of the most popular Disney characters among women. Try pairing a green tank top or leotard with a matching miniskirt.

Make some wings using the same methods mentioned in the fairy Halloween costume section, but carefully shape them like Tinker Bell's wings and paint them blue. Look at a picture of Tinker Bell for reference. Add green pumps or ballet slippers with large white pom-poms glued on.

Tie your hair up in a bun if it's blonde. If your hair is not blonde, get a long blonde wig and style it.

Try other characters from the Disney, such as Minnie Mouse or Cruella De Vil.

Homemade Angel Halloween Costume

Find a white dress, or put a white blouse together with a long white skirt. Try out different fabrics, such as satin and gauze, until you find something you really like.

Craft some angel wings from cardboard. Then attach some white artificial feathers with glue. Start at the bottom and gradually work your way up, overlapping the feathers on top over those which are on bottom. Artificial feathers are available at most craft stores. Add any additional accessories that you'd like to your angel costume, such as a halo made of gold chenille stems.

Homemade Vampire Halloween Costume

Get a floor-length red dress. Then find or sew a black gothic robe to go over the top. To make this really look like a vampire costume, the red fabric of the dress should show in a long strip when the robe is placed over it. Sew some button holes on both side of the bodice of the robe, and then lace them together.

If you have dark hair, run a streak of white hair coloring into part of it. Get a vampire wig if your hair isn't the right color.

Add other vampire accents to your costume such as full length gloves, white makeup with blood stains, vampire teeth and gothic shoes.

Homemade Flapper Halloween Costume

For the flapper costume, find a straight sleeveless dress that comes to about mid-thigh. It can be any color you like, such as blue, black or purple. Then find some stockings which come up to just below the hem of the skirt. Find a long cigarette holder and place a cigarette in it. Add a feather boa and some long gloves. Hunt down a simple cap and attach a decorative feather in front. For best results, try to find a beaded hat. Then get a long strand of artificial white pearls and tie them where they meet your waist. Style your hair in a wavy hairdo.

Fishnet hose and a headband are good alternatives for the stockings and hat.
