Homemade Halloween Costumes: Rednecks to Mummies

Laura Ward
With Halloween right around the corner, costumes are on the front of everyone's minds. Your children (and perhaps you!) have probably been thinking about what they want to dress up as this year. Everyone knows what kind of costumes the stores have in stock. Clowns, animals, superheros, fairytale characters and other ordinary costumes. If that is not what you are looking for, put your thinking cap on and try a homemade costume this year! You will likely have a blast making a very unique costume and you might also save a bit of money, too!

Turn your snaggle-toothed seven-year-old into a redneck farmer! More than likely, you will have everything you need at home already. If you dont, you could probably borrow or even cheaply purchase the items. Your child will need a pair of denim overalls, a plaid button up shirt, a red bandana, a straw hat and some boots. Wha-lah, a true farmer at last! Let your child use a kid-sized wheelbarrow as their candy bucket if they wish!

A mummy is very easy to create. Because the costume will be sewn and made permanent, you will need a pair of pants that your child no longer wears and a shirt that can easily be replaced. Visit the drugstore and get gauze bandages. Cut the gauze bandages into strips and sew them onto the pants and shirt. They do not have to be perfect, but you do need to cover the pants and the shirt well. Make sure that you also wrap your childs head in the gauze, but leave holes for their eyes, nose and mouth.

Turn your child into a bag of groceries! You will need to purchase a roll of brown packaging paper from the post office. Cut a sheet of the packaging paper large enough to go over your child's head and cut an area out for the head to go through. Cut the fronts from cereal boxes, pasta boxes and other types of groceries. You can also purchase a set of pretend foods from the toy aisle. Glue, tape or staple these items into the bag. Once the costume is on, staple the sides up so they are attached like a grocery sack. Affix a receipt from your last grocery trip onto the bag as well.

Be a bunch of grapes this year. To do this, your child should wear purple stretch pants and a purple shirt. Blow up purple balloons to the size of a small basketball or large softball. When you tie the balloons off, insert a safety pin into the tied part of the balloon and attach it to the shirt and pants, if needed. Cut a leaf from a piece of gree felt and hot glue to a hair barette for the leaves.

To become an instant, and the cutest, gumball machine you will need a multi pack of colored balloons and a clear trash bag. Have your child wear black pants a black shirt. Place a clear colored trash bag on your child's head and cut an area out for their head to fit through. You will also need to cut small arm holes. Blow alot of balloons up to the size of a softball and fill the trash bag up! Once you have filled the bag with the balloons, fasten a belt around your child's waist so that the bottom of the trash bag is secure. With a washable marker, write 25 cents on your child's cheeks.
