When it comes to cleaning your hardwood flooring, what is the best option? Many people go out and buy all kinds of specialty products to use to clean their hardwood floors. Many of these products are expensive, other products contain harsh chemicals, and some actually should not be used on hardwood floors. So how do you choose the right cleaning product?
Well, the right cleaning product may not even be available on store shelves. The right cleaning product is probably already sitting in your kitchen cupboard somewhere.
Most hardwood floors today are either prefinished with an aluminum oxide finish, or site finished with a water based polyurethane. The good part, both of these finishes are extremely durable and are simple to clean. The bad part, these finishes can be compromised if you use a cleaner that is not compatible with the finish.
What cleaner should you use? You should use a cleaner that you can easily make at home. A cleaner that is cost effective, does not contain harsh chemicals, and is readily available. To make a homemade hardwood floor cleaner you will need water, some plain unscented dish soap without perfumes or dyes, and a spray bottle. To make the cleaner, fill the spray bottle with water, add two or three drops of the dish soap, shake and you are done.
This cleaner will easily cut through grease and dirt that may accumulate on the floor. To apply, simply mist an area and immediately wipe it up with a microfiber cloth, or a microfiber sweeper. The microfiber will trap dirt, and absorb the water quickly. It is essential that you remove the water from the floor quickly. As water can damage the floor if it is allowed to stand on the surface for an extended length of time. Using the process of misting and wiping above, your floor should be dry to walk on within a minute or less.
The homemade cleaner is non acidic, will not produce strong odors, is easy and the hands, and costs next to nothing to make. So the next time you need something to clean your hardwood floors, consider this cheap and effective option.
