If harsh mosquito sprays just aren't your thing, then try making your own homemade mosquito spray. One method that is tried-and-true is to simply use vanilla extract. The alcohol smell that mosquitoes scent keep them off of your skin, and you don't need to smell like a mosquito repellant all day long. Simply add a few drops of vanilla extract to a small spray bottle of water and play around with it and see what works for you! If you are especially prone for mosquito bites, then I would suggest 6 drops of vanilla extract per 8 ounces of water, then spray on all areas of your exposed body.
Vanilla extract works to keep away the mosquitoes if it's the nasty smell of mosquito repellant that you hate. The cheap stuff works, so don't be picky about what you use. You can put plain vanilla extract on your skin, either the real stuff or the artificial; it all works the same. Rub it on exposed areas of your skin, or just on your pulse points, which will keep mosquitoes away without having to douse yourself in vanilla extract.
What I love in treating mosquito bites I also found out keeps them at bay as well. Witch hazel is my favorite stuff in the whole freakin' world, and I have found it to be wonderful in not only treating those nasty bites that drive me nuts (I get bit rarely, luckily) but in keeping the mosquitoes off of my skin as well. To apply witch hazel as a natural mosquito spray, you can pour witch hazel into a spray bottle and spray exposed skin and already bitten skin to keep mosquitoes off and make the itching stop, or you can do what I do. I simply take a paper towel or napkin and douse it with witch hazel, then rub the towel on my skin to keep mosquitoes off. I swear, it works.
I hear rubbing alcohol works as well, but witch hazel has a much lighter odor to it, and doesn't sting like rubbing alcohol does. Besides, rubbing alcohol won't make current mosquito bites stop itching the way that witch hazel does. I tell ya, if you don't have witch hazel in your house, you need it. It's great for a ton of stuff besides a mosquito spray.

- All-Natural Mosquito RepellentThe reason why I switched to all-natural mosquito repellent is that I don't trust the DEET in commercial insect repellents.
Homemade Mosquito RepellentBy using the oils and leaves of certain plants, you can create homemade mosquito repellent and avoid the dangers and smell of DEET.
