Go ahead and cover your work surface with newspaper. This will make clean up easier.

Now, the first step is to have the kids write down a list fo words that mean Mom to them.

Here are some ideas: Home, Love, Care, Warmth, Mother, and Eternal.

Have the kid's trace these words (or any they think of) into the side of their pillar candle with the tooth pick or pencil point.

They can use a sheet of paper to write them on and them use a sheet of graphite to transfer them if they want.

Now all they have to do it trace the words onto the pillar candle.

Tip: The kids are trying to create a groove for paint to rest in on the pillar candle. They can slowly work over the Mother's Day words a few times to create a good etching. If they press to hard with toothpick, then they may slip a put a separate scratch on the pillar candle.

Now, have the kids use the paintbrush to add some acrylic paint to the Mother's Day pillar candle. They need to brush paint into the Mother's Day words grooves they traced into the side of the candle.

If you find your paint is too thick you can use water to thin down colored acrylic paint.

Now, you need to let the paint set for about 4 - 6 minutes on the pillar candle. Use the cotton balls or cue tips to clean a way the excess paint form around the holiday designs. Avoid wiping paint out of the etched designs.

Tip:

If you accidentally remove too much paint, you can always start over a re add some more paint.

Now, you can tie a ribbon around the pillar candle if you want to give these as a gift. The kids could also load the pillar candles into a basket or even a clear plastic bag tied with a ribbon. Top it off with a homemade Mother's Day card from the kids and you have simple a beautiful homemade Mother's Day gift that fits even the smallest for budgets!
