Homemade Pet Toys for Cats

Create Your Own Pet Toys for Cats

Wendy Rose Gould
Cats are some of the easiest creatures to please when it comes to playing with toys. However, as the owner of several cats for a little over five years, I've learned that there are some expensive toy options out there. In that time, though, I've also learned that there are many cheap alternatives to complicated, pricey toys found in the pet section at your local supermarket. Some of my favorite toy inventions are the simplest. Try utilizing some of these household items the next time your feline is bored:

Tin Foil
That's right -- tin foil. Most households have tin or aluminum foil available, so this one's a cinch. Simply tear a piece of tin foil off and crumple it into a ball the size of a golf ball. Your precious kitty will have a roaring good time batting this toy around the house.

Packing Peanut on a String
If you tie anything to a string and dangle it in front of your favorite feline, chances are he'll have a blast no matter what. The packing peanut works well because it's easy to loop the string through it and it's a soft, squishy material. You can tie this to the door knob or hold it yourself.

Catnip-Filled Sock or Panty Hose
Put that lonesome sock (or torn panty hose!) to use with this fun toy. Put several teaspoons worth of catnip inside and secure the top. Then give the toy to your cat and watch her go crazy over it. She'll love being able to bat it around and the catnip inside is like a wonderful bonus from pet owner to pet.

Milk Caps
A great way to recycle those milk caps is to give 'em to your cat. They are easy to hit around and slide all over the place. This, of course, keeps your cat on her toes and moving around.

Warning:
Never give your cat very small toys or thin bones. Both can easily be swallowed, causing irritation, upset stomachs and in some cases, death. Small bones also shred easily, allowing your cat to ingest small, splinter-like pieces that can damage the mouth and internal organs.
