Homemade Recipes to Rid Your Home of Fleas

If you have pets in your home, you've probably had the unpleasant opportunity of housing fleas, especially if your pets spend time outdoors as well as indoors. Fleas are irritating pests that prey on the flesh of pets and can be carried into your home under your radar if you are not careful. If you have been unfortunate enough to find your home invaded by these pesky insects, there are a few things you can do from the comfort of your own kitchen to rid your home of the bugs.

Citrus

Surprisingly, citrus has an amazing effect on repelling fleas and allowing you to breathe easy, without all of the pesky itching! Immerse a lemon that has been sliced into quarters into a pot of boiling water and allow it to seep overnight. The steam and citrus in the air of your home will repel the fleas, but if you want to take an extra precaution it is advisable to put the leftover citrus repellent into a spray bottle and thoroughly spray your pet with the mixture to kill any existing fleas still irritating your pet's skin.

Bleach

In the center of the room you wish to treat, place a bowl filled with equal parts water and bleach and allow it to sit over night. If you have children in the hone be sure that this is out of their reach as it is not safe. During the night any fleas that are in your home will have been drawn to the water out of thirst but the bleach cleaner that is mixed in will do an effective job in killing them on contact.

Rubbing Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol can be sprayed directly onto fleas to kill them on contact (the alcohol suffocates them). However, like the rest of these recipes, is not a permanent fix to the problem if you continually allow your pet to roam in and out of your house.

Lavender

Lavender essential oils can be used throughout your home as well as on your pets to repel fleas. If you are using lavender essential oils on your pet, bathe them in the mixture in order to the the maximum effect that can be obtained with this recipe.

Obviously, if you are highly concerned with the number of fleas that are in your home it is in not only yours but your family's best interest as well if your pet stays either indoors or outdoors. Transferring your pet repeatedly from one place to another will only defeat the purpose of your repellents and your fleas will most likely continue returning.
