Hyperventilation is often the result of feeling anxious or stressful. Hysteria, crying, grief and panic attacks can also bring on incidents. It can also be caused by breathing disorders. People sometimes suffer from Hyperventilation when they climb to elevations that are more than six thousand feet in height too.
Covering both the mouth and the nose with a brown paper bag, then breathing into the bag for ten to fifteen minutes, is the most common homemade remedy for this breathing problem. This allows you to re-breathe your carbon dioxide. By adding CO2 back into your system, the symptoms of Hyperventilation will be lessened.
The symptoms of this breathing problem include, but are not limited to, tenseness, dizziness, recurrent yawning, a racing heartbeat, chest pressure or pain, and even numbness in the extremities. Having an incident of Hyperventilation has been compared to feeling like you're having a heart attack. The incidents normally last for twenty to thirty minutes.
Another homemade remedy for this type of breathing problem is to try and relax. It's obviously hard to do when you're hyperventilating. But, the more you can relax your breathing, the better you'll feel.
Since caffeine is a stimulant that revs up your system, it's a good idea to avoid it if you suffer from Hyperventilation. The highest food items that contain caffeine are coffee, teas and soda pop. Chocolate contains this stimulant too, but not enough to worry about... unless you're a Chocoholic, that is.
The same goes for smoking. Nicotine is another stimulant that will hype you up. Many people take a "smoke break" to relax their nerves, which is really ironic, because, of the absorption of nicotine into the body. There is no chemical in tobacco smoking that can actually help you relax. What makes you feel relaxed is:
a) The fact that you stopped the activity you were doing and sat down to relax, and b) While you're smoking, you're practicing deep, slower breathing when you inhale and exhale.
Learning to relax yourself before you become anxious is another homemade remedy for Hyperventilation. Some people try to avoid things, people and situations that make them tense and nervous, but sometimes that's hard to do. So, learning to control your breathing is a tactic you can use to help control your emotions.
Teach yourself to breathe normally. "Normally" means that you'll take a breath- breathe in and breathe out- every six seconds. If you practice controlled breathing on a daily basis, it will be easier to remember the next time you start to hyperventilate again.
