Homemade Remedies for Settling an Upset Stomach
Three Natural Ways to Cure Nausea - Peppermint, Chamomile and Ginger
Settle an Upset Stomach with Peppermint
I get carsick on long trips so my mom always had peppermint gum on hand. It has to be peppermint, not spearmint, not wintergreen, only peppermint. The gum works well because it will release the peppermint the over time. As a backup my mom also kept peppermint candy on hand.
If you have a child who can't chew gum or suck on candy then you can try to settle their upset stomach with peppermint tea. You can buy peppermint tea or just brew green tea and add two drops of peppermint extract or boiled peppermint leaves to it. You can also sweeten the tea with honey which will help sooth your throat also.
Cure Nausea with Ginger
Ginger was another of my mom's favorite nausea cures. If we were sick at home she would pull out some old fashioned ginger ale, add ice and make us sip it. This is a great remedy because it also keeps the sick person hydrated after a bout of throwing up and kids have a tendency to like the taste.
If you prefer a warmer drink you can make your own ginger tea. To make ginger tea you need to clean and chop up a ginger root. Put the root in two cups of water and boil it for ten minutes. Remove the root and use the hot water to make your tea. I prefer to use green tea with a touch of honey for sweetness.
Chamomile to Cure an Upset Stomach
Chamomile tea is probably one of the more easily accessible teas. All you have to do is buy it, brew it and drink it. Personally, I have never thought that chamomile tea works for an upset stomach but my coworkers swear by this cure so I had to include it. According to this NIH website there have been no studies to suggest chamomile will help settle an upset stomach.
I've been doing a lot of talking about teas because using a tea to ingest these spices is one of the easiest ways to use these natural nausea remedies. I like using tea to cure an upset stomach because it not only helps to settle the stomach it also helps to rehydrate after a person gets sick. Staying hydrated, especially for small children, is extremely important and should be the focus of settling an upset stomach.
