If you like relish and mayo or sandwich spread on your sandwiches, this makes about 6 pints of the best spread you'll ever taste. It's another of my "End of the Garden" specials.

Ingredients:

  • 1 quart Miracle Whip™ (do NOT substitute mayonaise)
  • 1 cup prepared yellow mustard
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 12 green tomatoes
  • 12 sweet green peppers
  • 12 sweet red peppers
  • 4 large onions
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • boiling water
Grind onions, tomatoes, and peppers as for relish. Pour boiling water over to cover; allow to stand for 10 minutes. Drain well, shaking or squeezing out excess water.

Mix everything together except flour and Miracle Whip™ in a large pan and simmer together for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Mix flour with 1/2 - 1 cup of cold water to make a thin paste. Add to the rest and cook for 10 minutes to thicken, stirring constantly.

Remove from heat. Stir in Miracle Whip™ and mix well.

Pack into sterilized pint jars. Adjust lids and bands, and process in boiling water bath for 12 minutes.

My grandmother used to make this sandwhich spread and it is great on leftover turkey sandwhiches! She passed away a couple years ago so it's been a while since I've had this. I just found her recipe a week ago and wanted to make it, but gramma never did write down ALL the directions! Thanks for the added instructions. I'm going to make it this week!
