Homemade (and scented!) mopping solution is a wonderful way to clean your floors and still keep your kids and pets happy and healthy, too. Simply store this super easy mopping solution in an old milk jug (all the more reason to justify why you keep so many of those damn jugs, anyhow) and you can have access to this safer and effective mopping solution whenever you want! Enjoy!
I simply use dish soap to mop my kitchen floors with, or add a bit of vinefar now and then, and I just buy super cheap dish soap that I can add an essential oil to (or just buy the dish soap in a scent I like, though finding a lavender vanilla combination is difficult) and then dilute it with water to create a homemade scented mopping solution that works well with kids and pets. Here's how...
The way I make homemade mopping solution it to take a gallon jug, fill it two-thirds full with water, then add about a cup of dish soap. I then add about 8-12 drops of an essential oil of my choosing to add a nice lingering scent once I'm done. I prefer to buy lavender-scented dish soap then add about 8 drops of vanilla essential oil. I fill the jug the rest of the way full with water, close the lid, swirl (not shake, this creates too much foam), and voila- homemade scented mopping solution safe for all floors! When I need the solution I simply just add it to the sink of water I'm using for my mop! (I fill my sink about 2 inches, and add a cup or so of the solution, depending on how dirty my floors are).
For daily mopping, I skip on the dish soap entirely. Simply pour in some vinegar into your sink water and use the mop to gently wipe away all the germs that are lingering on your floor. Or add a small squirt of dish soap to the sink water and vinegar to give your floors a quick cleaning. Most of the time, for mild cleaning, simply just add a small squirt of dish soap to the sink water for mopping. You don't need to go all-out for just maintenance mopping.
note: to quickly make your kitchen smell great, cheat a little bit by filling your sink with about an inch or so of hot water, adding 8-10 drops of an essential oil of your choosing, and mop your floors with just the scented water! Even just running the hot water in the sink with the essential oil in there (vanilla and orange are awesome for this) can make your house smell great with the rising steam!
