Homemade Shampoo and Conditioner

Make it Natural

Crystal Ray
Natural shampoo and conditioner is a refreshing change from store-bought shampoo and conditioner that contains unfamiliar ingredients, dyes, and perfumes. Commercial shampoo and conditioner may contain ingredients such as formaldehyde, glycols, ammonia, and cresol. Read the label of your usual shampoo and conditioner. Do you really want to shampoo and condition your hair with these ingredients?

If you'd rather use natural homemade products, consider making the following homemade shampoo and conditioner. These homemade hair products are effective, natural, and gentle on hair and skin, and they will save money.

Precautions Before Using Homemade Shampoo and Conditioner

Although the following ingredients are natural and gentle, some people may experience an allergic or adverse reaction. If you have skin allergies or are unsure about using any of the following ingredients or combination of ingredients, test the products on the inside of your elbow or wrist before washing or conditioning your hair. If there is any redness or irritation, discard the product and consider another option.

Homemade Dandruff Treatment

Those suffering from dandruff sometimes resort to using products containing coal-tar and recorcinol, and these ingredients have been said to cause damage to internal organs when ingested, and some dandruff shampoos contain questionable ingredients that are absorbed through the skin. Avoid using products that contain chemicals if at all possible, and choose natural homemade products and remedies.

Baking soda is touted as a great product for a number of uses, and controlling dandruff is one of them. Wet your hair as usual, and wash it with a palm full of baking soda. Rinse out the baking soda, and wash and condition your hair with your favorite gentle anti dandruff shampoo. The baking soda should help relieve the itch, and although baking soda is drying, it should help in your effort to gain control over problem dandruff.

Old-fashioned Homemade Castile Shampoo

Castile soap has been around for many years, and it's no wonder why. Castile soap is good for a number of uses, and homemade shampoo is one of them. To make Castile shampoo, simply grate a bar of Castile soap with a grater. Blend the Castile soap in an electric food processor or blender along with enough warm water to give it a thick pudding-like consistency. After this mixture is well blended, add about 1/4 cup of olive oil, and ½ cup of distilled water. Continue blending the mixture until it's well blended and ready to use. This homemade shampoo will make your hair soft, shiny, and naturally clean.

Mayonnaise for Hair?

You won't have to go far or work very hard to make this homemade hair conditioner. You only have to go as far as your refrigerator. Real mayonnaise is a fantastic conditioner. Although mayonnaise looks a lot like spreadable salad dressing, only real mayonnaise contains the right ingredients for conditioning hair.

Before washing your hair, condition it with a generous amount of mayonnaise. Simply dampen your hair, and apply mayonnaise as you would apply a conditioner. Cover your hair with plastic wrap, and cover your head with a bath towel. Allow the mayonnaise to deeply condition your hair for thirty or forty minutes, rinse your hair with warm water, and wash your hair as usual. Your hair will feel soft, exceptionally clean, and this homemade conditioner will make it look fantastic.

Ex was hip to the mayonnaise. I've heard of Castile, but not as a shampoo--sounds like a good homemade shampoo.

Mayonnaise is great for your hair as it protein rich. Same with raw egg too.

I enjoyed your article. I've published a variety of AC articles on choosing a shampoo and have come to the conclusion many of the ingredients added to commercial shampoos are worthless. Even worse, these ingredients may have adverse health consequences. Thanks for your contribution. :-)
