The kids should be able to make these simple Valentine's Day candleholders in less than an hour. I think each one should cost you $2 or less, depending on what materials you end up needing to buy.
To Make These Simple Valentine's Day Gift Tapered Candle Holders You Will Need:
20 Oz Coke Bottles
Sharp Knife
Scissors
Acrylic paint
Red, Pink, Purple, or Patterned Ribbon
Beads (optional)
Hot glue
Go ahead and remove the coke label off of the bottle. You can use a little Windex to help remove any sticky or stubborn parts of the label.
Now, cut off the dome shaped top of the coke bottle. I like to insert my knife, start working my way around until it is removed. After you have take this top part off you can use you sharp scissors to clean up the edges and make them straight. Now, this is the one part of the project you may need to help the kids do. Older kids could probably help younger kids with this step as well.
Now, your dome and mouth of the coke bottle is going to be the base of the Valentine's Day candleholder, so make sure it is stable.
Now, make sure you have bunch of newspaper laid out on your table to protect it while the kids work.
Put the lid on the coke bottle you cut off if you removed it. Now, pour in some acrylic paint and swirl it around unit the entire inside is coated with paint. You could also have the kids paint designs inside the coke bottle dome first. Let the Valentine's Day designs dry, then pour in some paint and swirl it around.
Now start running a bead of hot glue or white glue around the outside of the bottom of the dome. Place your Valentine's Day ribbon around the edge making sure that half of the ribbon is on the outside of the dome.
Now, run a bead of hot glue or white glue inside the edge of the Coke bottle dome.
Fold the Valentine's Day ribbon over and press inside the dome. This will create a beautiful and finished edge to the candleholder.
Now, cut off any excess ribbon.
Now, I like to use twigs from the yard and glue them near the mouth of the coke bottle. Go ahead and remove the cap of the coke bottle. You can glue anything form silk flowers to twigs to create some height. Once the glue has dried then tie a great Valentine's Day ribbon around the mouth of the coke bottle. You can insert you tapered candle and the homemade Valentine's Day gift is complete.
Don't forget to have the kids make a few extras so you can display some of their handy work on the Valentine's Day dine table as well!
