Homemade Winter Fashion Items

Missy Slink
The winter season is coming briskly upon us all, and with it comes the need to dig out our winter wardrobes. While some items tend to come and go with the yearly fashion trends, there are some articles that are simply winter wardrobe staples; these are the fashion items that will stay in style for years to come, and these are the ones worth investing in. Fortunately, many of these items can be relatively easily handmade, as long as you are willing to invest your time in learning and mastering a few traditional "homemaking" skills.

Much of winter fashion can be broken down into two categories: outer layers and accessories. A fashion staple for the outer layer for both men and women alike is a pea coat. Whether a classically styled pea coat, or one of a more modern cut, these coats have been hugging the shoulders of stylish citizens for many years. While fashioning and sewing your own pea coat might fall into the category of "ridiculously difficult," sewing on your own unique buttons does not. Anyone who has owned a pea coat knows the agony of losing a button at some time or another, and because of this, it is perfectly acceptable (even laudable) to sport a winter coat with unmatching buttons. However, in order to ensure that your button modification does not look tacky, choose classic looking/vintage styled buttons as your replacement buttons.

The rest of winter fashion, accessories, can generally easily be created through either the craft of knitting or crocheting. No longer pastimes preserved for the elderly, both of these skills will come quite in handy for a do-it-yourself winter accessory collection of hats and scarves. While mastering the techniques and stitches of crocheting and knitting can certainly take time, it does not require a large monetary investment. Practice stitches of yarn can easily be unraveled for beginning knitters to try again and again, and the yarn will never go to waste. Additionally, the variety of yarn in the average craft store will allow you to easily choose unique colors and textures with which to fashion your masterpieces . While some knitting or crocheting patterns can definitely be purchased in craft stores, there are also plenty of free patterns available online. One such place is the online community of Ravelry for knitters and crocheters to share their pattern ideas and experiences with the craft. Free to join, Ravelry is a great place for both beginning and advanced yarn-workers to check out for new ideas.

As you organize your winter wardrobe this year, try making some of your staple items yourself. Whether it's picking up a needle and thread to re-do your coat buttons or grabbing a crochet hook, fashionable and affordable winter accessories can be right at your finger tips.
