Homemade Yellow Cake Recipe from Scratch

Easy to Make Yellow Cake

Kimberly Thompson
I usually take advantage of boxed food items at the grocery store. I have two children and I homeschool them both. Sometimes I just don't have the time to cook from scratch, and sometimes I just don't know how. So I went to my grandmother, someone who has been cooking and baking since before you could buy food already prepared in boxes. Someone who baked her first cake from scratch because there was no other way to do it. And this is the recipe she told me to use. Well I have to tell you that I was a little nervous because I had never made a cake that didn't come from mix in a box, you can never be sure what you will get when you start from scratch. It is hard to mess up a cake mix from a box, although not impossible. But I tried this yellow cake recipe, and it really works. I can even tell the difference in taste between this "homemade" cake and a cake mix from the box. The recipe that follows is the one that I use now. Please follow it well because I want you to taste the difference too.

I was also very happy that all of the ingredients were things that I already have at home. It is always nice to pull out a recipe and have the ingredients in your pantry. What follows are the ingredients that you will need:

First preheat your oven to 350 degrees, you will be using 2 ( 9 inch cake pans )

It is VERY IMPORTANT, that you grease and flour both of your pans.

2 eggs
2 cups Self Rising Flour
1 cup milk
1 cup sugar
½ cup shortening
1 tbsp vanilla flavoring

First you take a large bowl, sift together the flour and the sugar, use a fork to cut in the shortening. Then add the milk and the vanilla flavoring, beat with a mixer for 2 minutes, then add the eggs and beat for 2 more minutes. Pour the batter evenly into both pans. Try to make sure you have about the same amount in each pan so that they will bake equally in the same amount of time. You will bake them for 25 - 30 minutes. When you check them you can use a toothpick, when inserted in the middle of the cake it should come out clean. When it does your cakes are done. I usually let them cool for 5 - 10 minutes in the pan, and then I turn them out of the pan onto cooling racks. Let them cool completely before trying to frost them. I usually let them set about an hour unless I am in a hurry. Then you can frost them with a can of frosting from the store, or you can make your own frosting from scratch but that is another article.

Egg yolks are what make your cake mix yellow instead of white. Want white cake omit the yolks.

i made this cake and it was the best cake i have ever made you must have not followed the directions correctly or maybe you should just not cook maybe go to the store and buy one already made that would be the smart thing to do if you cannot follow simple directions

I am sorry to say this cake was disgusting. The batter was doughy & tasted/smelled like flour. After baking for 25 minutes the 2 cakes were done. They looked like biscuits and they tasted just like bread. Also, they were falling into crumbs and very dry. I am annoyed at my waste of time and ingredients. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A GOOD CAKE, DON'T TRY THIS RECIPE!!
