Whooping cough is a contagious disease. Children are mostly affected by this ailment, but adults who have never had it are liable to contract this disease on exposure to an ailing individual. Individuals who have once suffered from this disease rarely contract it a second time.

The symptoms at the commencement are quite similar to those of mild bronchitis, cold or chest congestion. Fever, difficulty in breathing and cough are also associated with the onset of the disease. Within a few days the fever abates but the cough becomes taxing, and recurring paroxysms are experienced.

At the end of ten to fifteen days from the onset, the characteristic symptoms appear. Paroxysms of rapid coughing occur, that disrupt intake of breath, until the lungs feel like exhausted of oxygen. The upper portion of the windpipe is sporadically constricted, the face become inflamed and livid, and the sufferer appear to be on the verge of asphyxiation. The spasm gradually recedes as the coughing ceases and the air reenters the larynx with a long-drawn whooping sound.

In severe cases, blood spurts out from the mouth and the nose during the paroxysm that recurs every hour or less. The acute stage is reached within six weeks from the beginning of the cough and terminates within another six weeks, unless further complications like cold or bronchitis prolong its course.

Allopathy uses nauseating and debilitating drugs that can seriously injure the patient's vitality. Homeopathic medicines are safe and are very effectual is giving relief to this illness.

Aconite should be given once in two hours at the initiation of the disease when there is fever, until the fever subsides.

Belladonna needs to be used once in two hours when the fever recedes at the end of two or three days. However, if fever persists, Belladonna and Aconite should be alternately administered at intervals of two hours. This remedy should be continued until the whooping sets in.

Pulsatilla must be administered once in two hours if the cough should become moist with mucus or food being thrown up with the cough and diarrhea occurs.

Cuprum should be given after every paroxysm of coughing to a patient who has started whooping and was henceforth being treated with Belladonna. If there is fever, symptoms of convulsions, or a headache, one dose of Belladonna twice or thrice a day may be given in addition to Cuprum but never within 30 minutes of giving the latter.

Drosera, one dose repeated every twenty-four hours, should be given if Cuprum fails to allay the severity of the symptoms even after four or five days. This should be continued until there is some improvement.

Veratrum needs to be given after every paroxysm if all the previous named remedies fail to lessen the severity of the syndrome, especially if the patient suffers from vomiting and weakness.

Tartar emetic should be given in obstinate cases after every convulsion.

Sulphur, one dose every night should be given if even the above-mentioned remedy fails to effect cure, and this should be accompanied by Belladonna every two hours in the daytime until the patient gets well.

Next time when you or someone you know are having whooping cough do consider giving homeopathic treatment a try.
