Capsicum is better known as sweet pepper, chili pepper, green or red pepper. In other parts of the word capsicum is even referred to as paprika. Capsicum is from the Solanaceae family.

Description: The plants vary from pepper plants but the majority has woody straight stems, with white star shaped flowers. Each plant will differ in type of fruit, size and color. The capsicum plants have many white seeds.

Medicinal Uses: Capsicum is used for throat infections in gargle form, or for stomach disorders. Capsicum has also used to reduce hardening of arteries, heart disease, and used in ointments and lotions to relax muscles and ease pain.

Poison Factors: Capsicum is used in pepper sprays and can be an eye irritant.

Chemical Components: Capsicum species contain methyl vanillyl nonenemide (capsaicin). Capsaicin is a lipophilic, a chemical that causes a burning sensation.

Important Information: Capsicum is not evaluated by the FDA. It should not be used by pregnant or breast feeding mothers as there is no evidence that will not harm the unborn child or transfer to the breast fed child.

Interactions: Cocaine should be avoided when using capsicum, the side effects of death and or heart attack are greatly increased. Anticoagulant or Antiplatelet drugs interact with capsicum. Due to capsicum slowing blood clotting, medicans that slow blood clotting such as aspirin should be avoided. Theophylline should also be avoided if using capsicum.
