Homeschooling doesn't have to be expensive. There are many ways to design your own curriculum without spending a fortune. Even if you use workbooks from the book store, and come up with your own lesson plans, however, there is still an initial outlay of money. If you're ready to get started with homeschooling and the budget is stretched beyond tight, there is a great way to jump right in without spending a dime.

What is Freeworldu?

Freeworldu is a totally free educational tool available to anyone with access to an internet connection. The freeworldu system is based upon the flashcard theory developed by World Health Medical School Founder Dr. David Hall, whom upon traveling to Africa in 1972, realized that money was not a solution to educational problems. Dr. Hall believes that what really works is breaking information down into the smallest units possible. The most efficient way to do this is in flashcard format.

The Freeworldu website contains over 37,000 flashcards ranging from preschool to pre-med. The organization's mission is to provide free online education to everyone worldwide, focusing on a complete K-12 curriculum. This is particularly beneficial for homeschoolers who need a way to defray the cost of homeschooling.

In addition, Freeworldu offers a student assessment page, a tutorial, and a downloadable version of the California state K-12 curriculum requirements for those who need to provide that information to the state for homeschooling purposes. Freeworldu will also give parents phone or email support in case there are any questions or difficulties as their child works through the curriculum, though the site is so easy to use that such problems -- according to the staff -- are rare.

How does Freeworldu work?

The first step is registering at the Freeworldu website. When your child is ready to begin, choose a grade level, then a subject. Each subject has a set of virtual flashcards, complete with colorful illustrations, which your child will tackle one at a time. The goal is to memorize the piece of information on the flashcard. Once this goal is reached, the child can remove the flashcard from the lineup with one click of the mouse. The system keeps track of the child's progress, so that you can clearly see which areas have been mastered and which need further attention.

If desired, you can also choose to have classical music playing softly in the website's background while your child studies the flashcards. Research has suggested that classical music can improve memory, at least short term, thus improving the ability to learn. Music does so by helping to synchronize the brain's left analytical hemisphere with its creative counterpart, the right spatial hemisphere. According to Freeworldu: "When both hemispheres are engaged, the brain is able receive more information. You can retrieve information quickly because the music acts as a carrier wave to long-term memory storage."

Why choose Freeworldu?

When it comes to homeschooling, there are so many curriculum options available that it can be dizzying. In addition to the challenge of determining which one is best for your child, the high cost of many of these programs can be prohibitive for those who are trying to homeschool for a reasonable cost. Freeworldu is an ideal solution for many homeschoolers because not only is it completely free, it also condenses a multitude of subjects into one fun, user-friendly location on the web. Dr. Hall himself says it best: "Free World U works like a game, and turns a chore into entertainment. It's like having a superteacher at your beck and call at all times."
