Alphabet Lesson Plan for Letter I i
Handwriting: On your lined school paper, write a capital I and three dotted capital I's. Free printable line paper can be found here. Have your student trace these and try to write at least two on their own. Repeat with the lowercase letter. You may need to help your student correctly hold the pencil, or even help them to trace and shape the letters if writing is a new skill.
Letter Recognition: Provide your student with a page from a large print word search puzzle. These can be found in inexpensive coloring books or created online at Superkids.com Write the letter I, at the top and circle one I on the puzzle. Have the student circle all the remaining I's. Make it fun, like a treasure hunt. Crayons or markers are ok for this activity and make it more exciting. When your student is done, double check their work. Be sure to praise their effort. A fun activity to try next is to connect the dots. Draw a line that connects all of the circled I's. This is a great hand-eye coordination activity. Use some creativity and see if there are any recognizable shapes made.
Animal: The animal for letter I is Iguana. Find a few books about Iguanas at the library. Maybe visit a local zoo or watch some videos online with real Iguanas. Have fun with an Iguana Coloring page found here. Read the books together.
Sight Words: I, IN, IT and IS are the sight words for letter I. Make flash cards for these new sight words, and review the previously memorized sight words from letters A through H. Play games with the flashcards, such as memory and matching games. Memorization of sight words will aid in reading speed and comprehension.
Snack Idea: Green Jello Gigglies in the shape of Iguanas is a great snack for letter I.
Color or Shape: Use color GREEN, for Iguana.
Body Part of Movement: Continuing to use the letter I, and the sight word IN, practice the meaning of In and OUT.
Music or Reading: Some preschool/kindergarten alphabet lesson plans have more than one song or story. For this lesson, "If You're Happy and You Know it Clap Your Hands" is a great interactive song that many students area familiar with. Dr. Seuss's "Hop on Pop" is a fun story that many beginning readers will be able to read independently.
Fun activity: Reinforce the meaning of IN/OUT by playing Hokey Pokey, putting body parts in and out of the circle.
There are other ways to include this lesson's letter into the school day. Think of other words that begin with the letter I, such as Igloo, Ice, Inchworm. Make posters with the letter I and include anything that starts with the letter I. Have FUN, and use positive reinforcement and enjoy!
