Alphabet Lesson Plan for Letter K k
Handwriting: On your lined school paper, write a capital K and three dotted capital K's. Free printable line paper can be found here. Have your student trace these and try to write at least two on their own. Repeat with the lowercase letter. You may need to help your student correctly hold the pencil, or even help them to trace and shape the letters if writing is a new skill.
Letter Recognition: Provide your student with a page from a large print word search puzzle. These can be found in inexpensive coloring books or created online at Superkids.com Write the letter K, at the top and circle one K on the puzzle. Have the student circle all the remaining K's. Make it fun, like a treasure hunt. Crayons or markers are ok for this activity and make it more exciting. When your student is done, double check their work. Be sure to praise their effort. A fun activity to try next is to connect the dots. Draw a line that connects all of the circled K's. This is a great hand-eye coordination activity. Use some creativity and see if there are any recognizable shapes made. (like cloud watching)
Animal: The animal for letter K is KANGAROO. Find a few books about KANGAROO and other Australian animals at the library. Maybe visit a local zoo or watch some videos online with real KANGAROOs. Talk about the how KANGAROOs carry their babies, called a JOEYs in a pouch. KANGAROOs have big, strong back legs that make them super jumpers.
Sight Words: For this alphabet lesson plan, the sight words are OK and KING. Make flash cards for these new sight words, and review the previously memorized sight words from letters A through J. Play games with the flashcards, such as memory and matching games. Memorization of sight words will aid in reading speed and comprehension.
Snack Idea: A fun snack for the letter K, is KANGAROO shaped sugar cookies. Here is a link to a very easy sugar cookie recipe. The recipe is simple enough that young children can do most of the measuring, mixing and shaping.
Color or Shape: The color for this Alphabet Lesson Plan is BROWN. Color a KANGAROO and its JOEY brown on this printable page. Brown is often a difficult color to make fun, but with KANGAROOs the kids will love it.
Body Part of Movement: Continuing to use the letter K, and introduce the body part KNEE. Many kindergartners and preschoolers get KNEE and ELBOW confused. Just like the KANGAROO, we really use our KNEEs when JUMPING. Do a lot of jumping, big jumps, little jumps, loud jumps, quiet jumps. Jump over safe objects or a line in the play-yard. This helps build the understanding of the word OVER.
Music or Reading: Some preschool/kindergarten alphabet lesson plans have more than one song or story. For this alphabet lesson read the book by Eric Carl "Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother Too?" A great book with wonderful illustrations.
Fun activity: For this lesson keep working on the recently learned Jumping Jacks, from the letter J lesson plan. What may seem like a simple exercise for adults is a very challenging activity for most youngsters. Moving the arms and legs at the same time in opposite directions is very difficult for preschool and kindergarten age children. Talk about this and also try rubbing bellies and patting heads to build coordination.
Another fun activity for letter K, is to make crowns for KINGS. This is an easy project for small hands. Cut and paste activities are always fun.
There are other ways to include this lesson's letter into the school day. Think of other words that begin with the letter K, such as KITE, KITTEN, KICK, KING, and KINDERGARTEN. Make posters with the letter K and include anything that starts with the letter K. Have FUN, and use positive reinforcement and enjoy!
