Homeschooling on a Shoestring Budget

A Series of Guides Designed for the Budget Minded Homeschooling Family

Nicole Humphrey Cook
Homeschooling is on the rise. The decision is being made by more and more households across the nation. Many families are choosing to homeschool instead of placing their children in public or private institutions. Everyone has different reasons for choosing to homeschool their children and each families situation is different.

Of course there are concerns with homeschooling as well. One of these concerns is the expense related to it. Purchasing curriculum, computer programs, office supplies, and academic materials (i.e. Games, puzzles, books, and other educational activities) can cost a lot, and aren't always easy to obtain.

Public and private schools are given financial help. These schools receive special funding for each individual child that attends the institution. For a public school, it is typically state funding, and for a private school, it is usually tuition based.

A homeschool receives no financial help in any way, shape or form.

The misleading expense of homeschooling is often a major concern for parents who are thinking about it, as well as a deterrent for some who don't realize that it does not have to be expensive and you can homeschool on a budget.

After trying my own hand at homeschooling, and having the same concerns that most parents face, I realized that there are tons of budget friendly materials and activities available as well as many free items too. You just have to know where to look.

Budgeting is bigger today than ever before. With many homeschooling families surviving on a single income, as well as the cost of living higher than it should be, considerations have to be made to ensure that the child receives a well-rounded education in the homeschool. However, that does not mean that you have to break the bank to be a homeschooling family.

After careful research from several sources, trial and error on my own part and several other homeschoolers, and several interviews to homeschooling families, I have taken the guess work out of homeschooling on a shoestring. This series will take a look at how to homeschool on a budget, find resources that cost less or are free and alternative ways to making some side income while still homeschooling.

The myth is simply that homeschooling is expensive. The fact is that it does not have to be. With the help of several families and my own experiences, I hope to provide a full series of articles that will help all homeschooling families obtain the necessary supplies for the least amount of money.

I look forward to hearing your feedback and finding out what your individual needs are. I am by no means an expert, I am however someone who has lived a homeschooling lifestyle, learned from experiences and has a strong desire to share with others.

I was honestly almost scared away from homeschooling by the "it's expensive" myth but now I homeschool three children for pretty much free. It's amazing what free resources you can find to help you homeschool.
