Homeschooling Through High School: Preparing a College Resume

High School Students Need Extra Curricular Activities

Lynda Altman
As a homeschooling parent, you put in a lot of time and effort into your child's education. With the onset of the high school years, it is more important than ever to make sure that your student's education is balanced out with extra curricular activities. Creating a college resume is not the same as a high school transcript. The college resume should include course work as well as all additional activities your child participates in.

Work Experience

If your high school homeschooler has a job or a home based business, be sure to include this in the college resume. Keep a log of hours worked and job descriptions. For students with a home based business, detail what your child accomplishes on a day to day basis. Running a business requires goal setting, planning and organization. Colleges and universities look for students who posses these skills.

Clubs and Organizations

The college resume should include a list of all clubs, churches and other organizations that your child participates in. Create a description of what the organization's purpose is and go into minute detail of what your child's participation level is. 4-H participants keep a journal of the past five year's activities. This is something that you should have your child do for every group they participate in.

Homeschool organizations may offer academically oriented groups such as an honor society. Check with your local homeschool group to see if there is one in your area. Check to see if there are local science fairs or public speaking groups such as Toastmasters that your child can participate in.

Sports

Participation in sports should be included in the college resume. Include all awards, team leadership positions, and all-star participation. If your child participates in dance, cheer or martial arts; keep a list of all team and individual events that they participated in.

Academics

This is the area where homeschoolers can outshine their traditionally schooled peers. Homeschoolers have access to more academic challenges and competitions than traditional school children. Keep a list of all academic challenges and competitions that your child participated in. Write a paragraph about each competition; include its purpose and how your child performed in the challenge.

A well prepared transcript combined with a college resume will help get your child into the college or university of their choice. Not only will the resume help with college admissions, it may help in acquiring scholarship opportunities you were unaware of.

Thanks Theresa! I am doing the same thing for my 10th grader. He participates in the 4-H journal competitions so it makes it a lot easier.

These are all good ideas. My daughter and I are beginning to work on her college resume.
