Honduras National Team: On the Road to South Africa 2010

Jesus Mass
Honduras, a country where soccer is the most popular sport that brings the masses together, is finally one step closer to reaching the 2010 World Cup that will be held in South Africa. After 26 years and 6 failed attempts, this seems to be the year the national team will earn its right to participate in the cup. More than half of its starting players are currently starters in teams of highly competitive soccer leagues. David Suazo is a starting attacker for the Benfica club of Portugal. Wilson Palacios and Maynor Figueroa are performing key roles in England's Wigan club. Other players are standing out in clubs in countries such as Italy, Belgium, China and the MLS of the USA.

The colombian Reinaldo Rueda and his staff have been a tremendous influence on the players. A quiet man, avid reader and careful examiner of his opponenents. He transmits confidence and humility to his players, and he has been able to handle players that had disciplinary problems in past classification processes. His style of play is very tactical, patient, and adjusts according to the opponent at hand. Definitely, he has been the best selection for head coach of the national team.

This is the year that defines if the team classifies or not. A honduran myself, I am extremely confident that we have a 90% chance of attending our second World Cup. In our way we have USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Trinidad and Tobago, but our team is currently superior to most of these teams. So along with 7 million other hondurans, we are eagerly waiting for february 11, the day we will visit Costa Rica for our first match of the last classification round. South Africa, get ready to receive Honduras!!
