Honeymoons at Gunflint Lodge in Grand Marais, Minnesota

Forget the bright lights of the big city! If your ideal honeymoon includes relaxing by a lake, going for hikes in search of a moose or bald eagles and eating gourmet meals in casual clothes, one of the honeymoon packages at Gunflint Lodge located in the Superior National Forest northwest of Grand Marais, Minn. will fulfill your expectations. It did for my new husband and I!

Ambiance at Gunflint Lodge
Nestled among the evergreens on the Minnesota-Canada border along the Gunflint Trail (also known as Highway 12) rests Gunflint Lodge. The resort welcomes guests for honeymoons, reunions or just for a special getaway. We chose Gunflint Lodge for our honeymoon to enjoy some peace and quiet.

The "romantic cabins" are reserved for the honeymoon packages. Our cabin sat just at the edge of Gunflint Lake, just a quick 2 minute walk from the main lodge. Each day blue jays, squirrels and chipmunks dined outside the large cabin windows. One afternoon we watched a bald eagle swoop down over the lake and grab its meal.

Unlike home, our cell phones never rang once and we didn't flip channels on the TV looking for something to watch. The remote location doesn't offer such modern amenities. But, if you must get back in touch with the rest of the world, a pay telephone and free WiFi service is available at the main lodge.

Just for the Couple
The honeymoon cabins come equipped with a two-person spa tub, a two-sided fireplace and a television with a DVD/VHS player. The cabins also offer a CD player and a full kitchen if you want to cook up a late night snack.

Our honeymoon package included a daily pre-dinner delivery of a half carafe of wine and an appetizer to share at the cabin. We were also treated to activities at no extra charge including horseback riding, use of a boat with a motor and an evening wolf hike. Other amenities offered include couples massages, canoes, sleigh rides and snowshoeing.

Eating at Gunflint Lodge
When we weren't busy exploring the trails with our two dogs or relaxing in the spa, we were eating. All of the food at the two restaurants at Gunflint Lodge was fantastic. The Red Paddle Bistro is the lodge's casual bar and grill. Burgers, soup, sandwiches and cold beer topped the menu.

When we wanted to dine in an "upscale environment" we headed to Justine's Fine Dining. This dining area had a huge roaring fireplace, white tablecloths and three course dinners, including sorbet.

Our honeymoon package was all inclusive, so all of our food was included. We didn't pay extra for desserts -- which we had nearly everyday. After looking at the regular menu prices, the all inclusive package is a great bargain if you eat all three meals at one of the two restaurants. Guests also have the option to have breakfast delivered to their cabins each morning. We spent may mornings watching the sun come up over the lake and the blue jays begin to flock at our windows while gobbling down blueberry and wild rice pancakes, overstuffed omelets and hash browns.

Overall, I would highly recommend a honeymoon at Gunflint Lodge in Grand Marais, Minn. We didn't hear one police siren, cell phone ring or wonder "What should we do today?" The daily activities, amazing scenery and tranquil cabin kept us busy for the entire week.
