Honorary CLIO Awards to be Given to Barry Manilow and Matthew Weiner

The CLIO Awards, which honor innovation and creative excellent in the advertising industry, announced on February 24, 2009 that Honorary CLIO Awards will be presented to singer/songwriter Barry Manilow and Matthew Weiner, the creator and executive producer of AMC's Mad Men. The 50th Anniversary CLIO Awards will be held at Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on May 12-14, 2009.

Barry Manilow and Matthew Weiner are being honored for their distinguished industry contributions, according to a press statement by Wayne Youkhana, the director of the CLIO Awards. Youkhana went on to say that these two individuals have created bodies of work have evolved into cultural phenomena which are acknowledged around the world.

Barry Manilow

Barry Manilow has produced famous advertising jingles for companies like Band-Aid, State Farm, Stridex and Coca-Cola's Tab.

Manilow was the creator of some of the jingles that stick in your head, like "Stuck on You" for Johnson & Johnson's Band-Aid (Young & Rubicon, New York), for which he won a Best Television/Cinema Commercial CLIO in 1976. He also won a 1976 award for Best International Radio Commercial for "Countdown" for Coca Cola's soft drink, Tab (McCann-Erickson, Toronto).

Manilow is known best for musical recordings, including "Copacabana," "Mandy" and "Weekend in New England." In his successful recording career Manilow has sold more than 75 million records worldwide. Manilow is ranked by R&R (Radio&Records) and Billboard magazine as the top Adult Contemporary chart artist of all time

Matthew Weiner

Matthew Weiner, the Creator and Executive Producer of AMC's hit cable series Mad Men, will be recognized for his powerful storytelling in his television series about the rise of advertising in America. Mad Men is set in New York in the 1960's and follows the lives of competitive advertising men on Madison Avenue. Mad Men has been critically acclaimed and has won four EMMY Awards and two Golden Globes.

Weiner was also the Executive Producer for HBO's successful drama The Sopranos during the final two seasons of the series. Sopranos won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series for its final season.

CLIO Awards

The CLIO Awards recognizes creative excellence and the impact of advertising on modern culture. In 2009 the CLIO Awards are celebrating their 50th anniversary. The CLIO Awards are produced by Nielsen Business Media, which is part of The Nielsen Company.

    I went to a Barry Manilow concert many years ago and he played the jingles he'd written. It was surprising, how many well-known jingles were his.
