Honoring African Americans in February is Important

The Enduring Importance of Black History Month in the United States

The importance of Black History Month in Honoring African Americans is still very essential in American life. The emphasis here should continue to highlight the positive and everlasting contributions of black people in the Evolution and Contemporary History of America. But it must also be about promoting the kind of respectful spirit and hope rooted in love and understanding. And while the main focus is on African Americans, other Americans support (such as white Americans and others) cannot be ignored in this national social issue.

Carter G. Woodson and Abraham Lincoln are the two main historical Americans to be remembered. But so is Martin Luther King, Jr., from recent history. Events like the 15th Amendment (the right to vote could not be denied on account of race) and the founding of the NAACP in America are notable events in February. The world and Americans know the critical historical and current importance of these two of many events in today's contemporary and modern society. Because of these institutions, as the academics call them, African Americans (and inspired blacks worldwide) are more conscious of their significance as humans. But importantly, these institutions are not real and alive without the support and respect of other Americans in today's society.

This occasion also helps to encourage those who are sometimes at risk of becoming discouraged and neglected in contemporary American life. The knowledge of Black History Month and remembering the work, contributions and achievement of black Americans will help those who are in need of positive knowledge and encouragement, and who may at times feel victimized. Blaming "the system" is discouraged and emphasizing a person own abilities and past leaders achievements, will definitely help and work better to make black Americans and America's civilized modern state work better. Young black children, men and women who are not aware of their leaders past positive achievements to help them in today's world, may end up wasting their time, academic gifts and skills. So knowledge is really power, but the right knowledge can be a life-saver.

This annual event also helps in terms of how other Americas perspectives of black Americans are demonstrated in daily interactive life. When white and black Americans, for example, understand each other better, communications, work-relations, social life, political agreements, discipline and participation, among others factors, are certainly encouraged to work in respect and harmony. Incorrect "labeling" or stereotypes mentality are discouraged and replaced with broader perspective and comprehension of diverse culture and ethnic relations. Chinese and Latinos, for example, will have their own opinions of black Americas base on their own personal interactive experience (good or bad). But the removal of the general stereotype image in the minds of some, for example, will certainly help to enhance better and civilized relations. In each example above, the opposite is also applicable in daily living.

From an international perspective, Black History Month has also inspired nations around the world to change their social policies and laws to reflect a more just, modern and civilized diverse people or nation. Many academics in different countries have carried-on the work King Jr., for example, in philosophical terms, in real research, cultural and political life in their own countries. The British Caribbean States and Africa are notable places. But even on a broader diplomatic scale, in the United Nations for example, we can see the principles of justice, full participation, respect, voting, power, and other factors applicable to blacks at work. Many of the black nation leaders in the United Nations, though not totally pleased with the System, have seen historical changes towards respecting their international rights and power. This is encouraging, but certainly not enough. The point here is the global or worldwide implications of Black History Month and the Historical Principles associated with this event.

Therefore, while we remember and honor Carter G. Woodson and Martin Luther King, Jr., we cannot perceive and celebrate Black History Month in blacks only isolations in this modern world. Diverse cultures and views are helping to shape this event. But the main philosophy or perspective cannot be denied because it is set in the roots and positive contributions of blacks in the United States and now around the world.
END.
