If you enjoy being outdoors and hiking The Hoosier National Forest is a place you might want to explore. Located in south central Indiana, it is about a 2 ½ hour drive from Indianapolis. It is the largest natural area in Indiana. Featuring rolling hills, back-country trails, and rural crossroad communities makes this beautiful forest a favorite.

There are over 250 miles of trails, with a little over 200 miles designated for horseback riding and about 175 miles for bike riding all set within the 200,000 acres that make up Hoosier National Forest. Many rare plants, rock shelters, bluffs and coves provide many interesting places to explore in the forest.

Special points of interest include the special wildlife sites, Hickory Ridge Lookout Tower, Buffalo Trace and Lick Creek Settlement. Wesley Chapel Gulf is a national natural landmark of an 8 acre collapsed sinkhole which provides a window to the underground river system. Camping, fishing, primitive camping, hunting, backpacking and hiking are only a few of the things you can do on a trip to Hoosier National Forest. Wear bright colored clothing during hunting seasons. Forest streams do not meet safety standards for drinking water. Take your own water with you or be prepared to treat water before you drink it. I believe in the power of positive thinking. I'm a mother of 5, all grown, and I've 3 grandchildren that I spoil. Life is full of joy and I am here to live it. I am an explorer, a reader, a writer, a think...  View profile

Sounds like fun. Sad we have to treat stream water or pond water before drinking, isn't it? I can't imagine it being like that in the 1800's.
