Hope for Haiti Now: Outreach for Haitian Children After 2010 Earthquake and Beyond

How to Adopt a Haitian Orphan

Ranee Wright
As Tom Hanks said in the Hope for Haiti Now telethon broadcast, even after today, we must not forget Haitians and their need for aid. What must it be like for children of Haiti? In a country with so many orphans before the tragic 2010 earthquake, even more young are left with no family.

No power, water, communication, and transportation issues after the earthquake left many under rumble and compounded the rescue effort. Sleeping outdoors without shelter, limited to no medical aid to help the injured and dying; with 380,000 orphans before the earthquake, even more are left without homes or families after the devastating quake.

The gift of a child is amazing. I have to think adopting a Haitian child would be a constant reminder to be grateful for all we have in America. I bet many would open their doors to help Haitian orphans. As a sole provider, single parent of two, I would be willing to adopt a Haitian of any age. I cry and feel so bad for the Haitian people. A fearful thought crossed my mind. I hope the children don't get adopted by some freaks with ill-will.

There are many qualifications in place at God's Little Angels Orphanage to prevent the Haitian child from being placed in an abusive or poverty-stricken home. I do not qualify without special approval since I have two biological kids. Apparently, I need a presidential dispensation. Single men do not qualify and while this is discriminatory, I cannot argue. Only women over 35 are eligible to adopt. They also require you to make 2 trips to Haiti.

The International Child Foundation, Inc. is another avenue to take when seeking to adopt a Haitian child. Total agency fees: $5,800. The cost saddens me as not all wealthy are child worthy.

Images from Hope for Haiti Now are so heart-wrenching; you can see the feelings of hopelessness. Spectacular, beautiful, heartfelt performances on the Hope for Haiti Now telethon from famous performers and Haitian natives (writer's favorites): Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen, Dido, Mary J. Blige, Christina Aguilera, Sheryl Crow, Kid Rock and Keith Urban, Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris, Haitian Emeline Michele (wonderful voice!), Dave Matthews and Neil Young, Wyclef Jean (a Haitian) finished out the show - all delivered spectacular, beautiful, heartfelt music.

Americans often move away from their birthplace. Haiti's are too often stuck living where they were born, natural disaster prone and poverty-stricken. America has an epidemic of obesity while Haitians ribs show. So many take their health, simple pleasures of clean running water, technology and so many other privileges for granted.

Haitian education was struggling before the earthquake, with a little less than half of Haiti's 8.7 million illiterate. Donate to Haiti so they may rebuild today and teach the young tomorrow.

Thank you for this. It breaks my heart knowing there are so many children without parents to love and care for them.

This is a very worthwhile idea to consider. Great work on this article.

When I was married the first time and we were infertile, we looked into adoption and could not afford to adopt, even in countries such as Haiti where the orphan numbers are outrageous, after our divorce and subsequent remarriages, we both have two healthy, wonderful children. My husband and I often talk of adoption, but as you said, with bio-kids, it can be harder, and cost is certainly a hindrance for many. Thank you for a wonderful article! I hope all these children find loving and secure homes.

Ranee, I agree, this is a sad thing. My husband and I have were thinking about trying to adopt as well. I watched the Hope for Haiti show and thought that there was not as much emotion as I thought there would be. Maybe I am just getting desensitized at this point, hard to see so much pain and destruction. I am grateful for being able to take a shower, eat and sleep with a roof over my head.

Great information here. I watched the show and cried so hard, I just couldn't take it anymore. I was going to write about it, but I just couldn't continue, I absolutely could not stop crying. We would like to adopt, but as you state here, it would be impossible for us $$$ wise. Thanks for your courage. You're more woman than I am.
