Hornet's Guard Chris Paul to Have Foot Surgery

Nate D.
New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets guard Chris Paul will be having surgery on his left foot to repair a stress reaction. Though surgery is in the future, Paul will continue to play every game for the rest of the season for the Hornets.

Paul has been missing practices and will only play in games. Doctors felt that Paul could continue to effectively play in games but too much practice could make the injury worse. That much extra running could over-work the foot and aggravate it even worse.

In addition to playing for the Hornets in the NBA season, Paul is supposed to play with the United States national team during the summer. When asked about his status for the summer, Paul said, "I really haven't even thought that far in advance." Paul, who has played with the team before, became an important part of the squad as he started six out of nine games at the World Championships. During the tournament, Paul averaged 7.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per contest.

Paul, in his second year in the NBA, is having a great season. He is averaging 17.4 points per game to go along with 8.8 assists and 4.1 rebounds. Paul's assist numbers are fourth in the entire NBA. Paul is a very important part of a fairly young team. Losing Paul for the rest of the season would hurt the team very much. It is fortunate for the Hornets that he is able to finish out the year as he gives the team a lot of stability at the point guard position.

As of Monday, the Hornets are in 10th place in the very tough Western Conference with a record of 29-37. If the Hornets put together an outstanding run over the next 16 games they could possibly sneak into the eighth and final playoff spot. Though this will be very difficult to do, it is possible considering the Hornets are only two games out of the eighth spot. The presence of Paul will certainly give them a chance.

Paul will most likely be getting a screw in his foot to repair the fracture.
