A horrific accident claimed the lives of at least 21 people and injured many others overnight last night in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Coming in from Jakarta, the Boeing 737-400 carrying over 100 passengers appeared to overshoot the runway at the end of its 300 mile journey, bursting into flames.

According to survivors and witnesses, the plane shook violently when making its descent to the runway, and ended with hitting the ground and abruptly stopping in a rice field. The plane filled with smoke as the explosion in the front of the plane caused the fuselage burst into flames. The fuselage is the main section of the plane carrying the passengers, crew, and/or cargo. Thankfully emergency exits were operational, allowing over 100 of the surviving passengers to escape from the burning wreckage.

Many Australian diplomats and members of the media were on board the Boeing, one managed to capture video of the passengers escaping the wreckage. The video shows passengers injured, laying on the ground, as well as passengers who were able to walk away from the scene physically unharmed. The Australian government is sending aid in the form of federal police, air force, and press corps.

Officials and investigators at this point in time believe the accident to be truly just an accident; no purposeful incapacitation was evident at the scene. The focus of the investigation will be to determine where the error lied, whether human or machine. It is hopeful that a complete investigation will shed light on the situation.

The Boeing 737 is the most produced and requested medium commercial passenger jet. According to Boeing, there are over 1200 737's in the air at any given time. The 737 was created to allow Boeing to enter competitively into the field of small capacity jetliners, a field previously dominated by other aircraft lines. The 737-400 (the type of plane involved in the crash), was developed mainly for charter airlines, it has been in service since 1985. Besides the commercial charter 737-400, the 737-400 has been converted into and all cargo aircraft, and there are plans to create a combination 737-400 that would carry half passenger, and half freight.

This is not the first accident to mar the reputation of Indonesian travel. In December of last year a fatal accident involved a ferry sinking, and in January of this year, another plane (Adam Air) disappeared. This most recent accident comes hours after a high magnitude earthquake killed several in western Indonesia.
