Horror Movie Paranormal Activity Now on DVD

Drew Bush
Paranormal Activity was one of the biggest horror moneymakers of the year. I saw the movie when it first came out in the middle of October. I have to say that this was a movie that actually spooked me. Just so everyone knows, it takes a lot to spook me.

The movie starts out innocent enough. A couple, Katie and Micah, are filming themselves in their home. The reason for this becomes clear as slowly but surely strange occurrences begin to occur in the home. At first they are minor. First, Katie discovers her keys on the floor when she wakes up one morning. Then one night, the camera in their room is left recording and shows the bedroom door opening on its own. Things ramp up quickly as booming can be heard, something can be heard walking, and Katie begins walking in the middle of the night. The suspense ends up building to a tremendous level.

Perhaps the most astonishing fact is that the movie had an estimated $15,000 budget. That is right, only $15,000 dollars. In its first weekend out (October 18, 2009), the movie made over $19 million. As of December 13, 2009, the movie has made over $107 million in the USA (Internet Movie Database). It just goes to show that you don't have to have a huge $200 million budget to have a very successful movie.

While I do like to watch horror movies with a lot of blood and guts from time to time, I liked Paranormal Activity because it was something different from the norm. There was very little gore in the movie, yet it was still scary. Also, the movie allowed me and millions of others to use our imaginations. I was really impressed with the movie.

DVD Details:

I rented the DVD from a Red Box a couple of nights ago and watched it for the second time. It was just as good as the first time. Included in the DVD was an alternate ending not shown in theaters. I was glad that the alternate ending was not chosen for viewing in theaters because it wasn't as good as the ending that was shown in theaters.

The movie is 86 minutes long and it was released on December 29, 2009. I definitely think it is worth buying and adding to any DVD collection. It can be purchased at most retailers for between $15-20 (Wal-Mart: $15.86).
