Horse Riding Lessons in Metro St. Louis

Denise McGrail
Summer is creeping up on us and school is getting ready to dismiss for the summer. With three months of free time it is easy for a child to get bored. Most children enroll in camp or play various sports, but one favorite pastime can often be forgotten - horseback riding.

St. Louis has several options available for getting your child comfortable in the saddle. Irish Fox Stables, located in St. Charles, just west of St. Louis County, is one choice. They offer both private and group lessons. Private lessons cost $45 dollars per session, while a group lesson will cost you $40. However, if you are part of a group you can purchase a monthly lesson plan beginning at $150.00 This stable also offers boarding/training/lesson plans as well. Irish Fox Stables can be reached at (636) 398-6868. They are located at 10302 Hwy DD.

Another option for summer riding lessons is Wright Equestrian Center located in Troy, MO. This center is hosting a summer camp that includes activities such as riding lessons, grooming, saddling and showmanship as well as lectures on horse safety. The fee for this camp is $215 and includes a non-refundable $50 deposit. To get more information on ages and specific dates you can contact the center at (636) 462-3334. Wright Equestrian Center is located at 1028 Mennemeyer Road.

Horseback riding is also a therapeutic sport and can be enjoyed and beneficial for children with special needs. There is a wonderful facility located off Hwy Z in St. Charles County that offers riding lessons for children with physical or behavioral disabilities . Therapeutic Horsemanship has programs that are tailored to the specific needs of the child and they have trained staff and volunteers that will make horseback riding a fun and satisfying experience. Most of the lessons begin at about $375 per month and go up from there. To sign up for lessons a parent must call a therapist at the facility and set-up a time to complete a New Rider Evaluation to ensure that their child will be placed in the appropriate program. Therapeutic Horsemanship can be reached at (636) 332-4940. Their address is 332 Stable Lane.

Riding a horse is an unique and enjoyable experience. To be able to participate in a horse riding camp or take a few months of a riding lesson can give your child memories that will last forever.
