Hospital Housekeeping or Hard Laborer?

Is Your Health Worth the Risk

Katie Danner
I guess we have all had jobs that we dispise, I will be the first to admit that, and we have all have supervisors that were not worth a piece of ( sorry cant say).

but can you imagine working in a place where you may be the lowest thing on the totem pole! Well welcome to the world of health-care especially if you are not a doctor or a nurse, then you are considered the others. Do I sound bitter?, well hell yeah ! , I was a housekeeper in a hospital, that I shall not name, for 3 years and those were the worst 3 years of my life. Ha! ha ha!, one of my closest friends and I used to refer to it as HELL, we would wake up in the morning and text message each other "ARE YOU GOING TO HELL TODAY? ", And how about when not only the people who are professionals look down on you, but your own supervisors and I quote "Assistant Director "( that used to be a housekeeper ) treats you like a piece of ( OOPS! there goes that word again!). Anyway I am here to say that hard labor is back !!or maybe better compared to the chain gang!, In this hospital you as a housekeeper are given over 21 rooms or more to clean in a day., Some people may say What! and some people may say so!, Well I suggest you try cleaning up these rooms sometimes nasty from from the mess the nurses make,(the nasty ones refuse to use the garbage can), and sometimes nasty cause the patient could not make it to the bathroom....how would your back feel to mop 20 something rooms a day and then some!, some rooms need extra care because the patient is bedridden or comatose., so the floor needs extra scrubbing, But I am not blaming the patients, its those professionals that feel that it is not their job to pick up a piece of paper, that they themselves have dropped!. Its those professionals who look down on the housekeepers as if they are a gang of illiterate thieves or gypsies, just waiting to go into some poor patients pocketbook!

I am disgusted because I have been there, I have been to that point that where I didn't know what to do, I wanted to quit, but I had bills to pay, and the kids.............yes! I did it for the kids., I braved the ill! how can she do that looks!, I have braved the oh! she must be stupid looks!, and let me not forget the "if we have left overs lets give it to the housekeeper look!"

This is my first editorial and I dedicate it to a lovely lady Kim, Kim wanted to be in housekeeping so bad, and I remember when she was hired from the admitting dept., she was so excited,..... that was 6 months ago, now Kim is dead, Kim was already over weight, and that didn't seem to be the problem, but not one day did she not come and tell someone, how the management was treating her, for example after her 89th day of probation the housekeeping director called her into his office, and said that someone told him she was talking in the front lobby with one of the admitting staff she used to work with, and that he called the union and got her probation extended another 30 days!!. Well I will tell you after 3 years in that place I never heard of such a thing!!, and how mean can you be over hear say!!, they did Kim wrong..........poor miss Kim.....gone now........she wanted that job so bad!, but we tried to warn her!, died from a heart attack!!, I believe if miss Kim had stayed in admitting she"d be here today

To all you housekeepers out there keep your head up!, I am hear to say there is a way out!!, you are not dumb and you are not stupid!,
you just need a job!

  • The hard work and disrespect in some professions
I believe if you overwork your employees the quality of their work suffers therefore you facility suffers!
More people are injured on the job and employee morale goes down! I have seen it!

OMG! You said it as if it were ME talking! I have some college education but have been housekeping in a hospital for over 2 years now. It sucks. I got online to try and figure out what kind of flu-like, crud I have right now. Something I probably got from cleaning a patient's room. I'm getting so tired of watching people die on almost a daily basis, seeing medical screwups on people, cleaning 21 plus rooms and also the nurses break roons, nurses stations, restrooms.... and also watching coworkers having work related serious illnesses. You nailed it right on the head! I have to find a different job but am so tired at the end of the day that I don't seem to find time to go looking for other employment. By the time finish I helping my daughter with her homework I just want to sleep. I wanted to be a surgtech when I started working there and became a housekeeper to get a foot in the door. Now I find that what I wanted in the first place starts out low pay, is night shift and on call. Guess

I am sorry that your friend died, I think that housekeeping is one of the hardest jobs to do and do well, especially when you have to keep cleaning up after others, not to mention the health risks you face by being around sick people.
I do not believe I could do that type of job right now.
